Bad Interview Experience

I have recently started looking for a part time job and have applied for some of the Christmas temporary jobs. I have been working for the same company for years but it's closing after Christmas.

I just have been really annoyed after an experience this week and wondered if this is how things are now.

An interview at a high street store consisted of, being shown into a room where I took part in a role play, which I thought had gone really well and then left sat there for 15 minutes until a manager came in to talk to me. This was fine and he even started talking about where I would be working and asking how I would get there. He left and I was there again for nearly 30 minutes, actually began to think they had forgotten about me. Then the woman who did the role play pushed the door open said you failed the assessment and that was it. I just got up and left.

It was just so humiliating, is this how it is now. I know there is a lot of competition for jobs but they could least treat people with a bit of respect.

You got an interview and a response - that's more than you'll get for a large chunk of jobs you'll apply for right now.

That really isn't how it should be and is certainly not how I treat people. I'm sorry. There are better people out there to work for.

  • I don't think this is normal for the majority of companies, but some do treat people appallingly.

I once had an interview with Travelodge as a receptionist. It started with a group interview that felt little better than the above.

I've not had an interview like it since, thankfully. I just look back and think 'Thank God I don't work for a company like that': if they treat you like that at interview, what would they be like if you actually worked for them?!

I've started to realise that an interview sets the tone of what will be expected by and from both employer and employee, and that if you don't like the way they treat you at interview, there's a chance that you might dislike working there altogether.

Best of luck with any other interviews you have coming up.
Keep your chin up - you will find a great company who will treat you well.

I was just so suprised as it was a company you wouldn't expect this from and I always thought it would be a nice place to work.

Anyway have to be optimistic and keep on looking.

Sometimes I've found that the people running the application process aren't the same people as you will actually be working with. My son got a job in the NHS and found that the HR bods were absolutely useless and took months to sort things out, but once he actually started in the job, it's been fine.
  • Commiserations on your bad interview, but look at the positve, as a pp said you got a quick getaway from working for muppets like that!
Ive had so many degrading interviews, and unfortunately most of them have been for high street companies, a Pizza company, larger ladies clothing etc.
I think sometimes there are the odd people who when given the responsibility of interviewing, go on a power trip and get a superiority complex!
On the flip side I have been the cause of some god awful interviews, like the one for a well known diy and hardware chain, where after a fantastic interview, and being told "can't say officially but I wouldnt go applying for any more jobs if I was you" I shook his hand, bent down to retrieve my hand bag and then woke up in an ambulance! I'd only gone and smacked my head off the table as Id come back up, split my head open and knocked my self unconcious!! Safe to say I got a nice letter thanks but no thanks later that week!!!

I've just done a few interviews, they were all great, except one. I think being a good interviewer is a real skill! The one that wasn't great, were appalling to deal with afterwards as they wanted to offer me another position and not the one I'd applied for - it was like trying to pull teeth when I wanted further info on what that role would entail (amongst other things). Ultimately, their behaviour made the decision for me - I wasn't going to work for them!

Chin up and keep going :)
