Careful if you have a student (SLC) loan and move employers
Hi guys,
I thought this was a better place than the student board for this, as this is aimed at graduates instead. Feel free to move if you feel it should be in a better place...
I moved employers last year to a much smaller company who I suspect had never had to deal with anyone like me before (unlike earlier generations, my student loan payment comes straight out of my wages to the Inland Revenue). I suspected it was not coming out and had to nag my employer to sort it out by informing the IR (it is their responsibility).
They only just sorted it and now I have to make backpayments for the next few months to make up the deficit, as well as the regular payments. I did suspect this might happen so had tried to save a bit, but it still isn't a pleasant surprise. If I'd kept quiet about it I'd owe them even more, as it would have taken them longer to catch up with me, so I recommend coming clean if this is happening to you (as I remember several posters mentioning this last year, as it seems not all employers realise it is their responsibility).
