Help! Ever heard of this...?

Options
I have been asked to make a cake for a friend. Its his birthday and he has requested a type of tart I have never heard of, Apparently it has a pastry base (ok with that) and fruit like apples then a toffee topping (help- would that be when you boil condensed milk in a pan to turn it to toffee? how long would this take? Then a crumble top (ok with that)

Does anyone know the name of this tart? Just really need help with toffee topping and also would it not become runny when you put it in the oven to cook?

Comments

  • Carnation do a tin of toffee called Dulce -du - leche and it's in Tesco, next to the ordinary condensed milk. I think it may become a little runny when put in the oven but I would suggest thickening the juice from the apples with a little cornflour before you put the toffee topping on and having a deep rimmed dish.

    Good luck.

It sounds like a Caramel Apple Granny to me.....unfortunately I've never made one, but the hotel I used to work in many years ago had them. I used to have a slice for a sneaky snack. Now it's been mentioned, I really fancy a piece!

I've tried googling for a recipe, but not come up with anything useful.

I think the caramel could be done by melting sugar, a tiny bit of water and butter in a pan. No idea of the quantities, though!

This is the closest thing I've found, but it's got walnuts in, and the ones I've had haven't had any nuts at all. It could no doubt be modified though.

  • This one looks good!

You could use Dulce de leche for the caramel, or melt a packet of dairy toffees with a tablespoon or so of milk, or 125g sugar in a pan with 60ml of water, leave it until it turns a nice amber colour, then immediatley stir in 80ml of double cream and a teaspoon of vanilla extract...

Have fun and let us know how your creation turns out :)
  • Def a caramel Apple granny. Think it's a caterers special. Good luck making your own. Would love to hear about the results.
  • Maybe only in Scotland but I call it Caramel Apple Betty. It's yummy whatever you call it! Mr T does a similar one called Toffee Apple Crumble.
