Police job. Past CCJ`s. 6 years or ever?

When an employer states that you cannot have any CCJ`s (in this case the job is a police control room) do they mean the last 6 years or ever in your life? I know that 6 years history will show on a credit check but I may have had one years ago.
Do they just do a bog standard credit check and CRB check?

Given the wages they pay civillian staff, one would have thought they would be glad of the applicants.

Well thanks for the helpful input, but it pays more than I earn now in the NHS.

They should send you a vetting form or questionnaire - probably only enhanced CTC or SC and not DVlevel (look these terms up on the Defence Vetting website) for Ops room post.

They are looking for areas which might make you vulnerable to approaches from criminal elements and unmanaged debt is one of those. The more recent the problems then the less likely to be offered a post. Each force has a slightly different critieria for background checks.

Be honest with all details and give mitigating background as well (divorce, ill health or whatever) - they normally include questions about current living expenses which will also help them to see if you are living close to the edge.

Does the question say have you ever had a CCJ or does it say those with CCJs need not apply?

And given the work that is required in a control room environment and the stress levels involved then we should all be grateful that people are still prepared to step up to the posts - which, incidentally, are usually always way oversubscribed.

I would never advise lying to the Police. Well, I wouldn't advise lying to any employer, but especially not to one with the means to find out you lied. Your best course of action if you are serious about the job is to tell the truth and explain the circumstances, when it was, and what you did to put things straight. In most forces a single CCJ a long time ago, truthfully told, will not be a barrier (my sister says, and she should know as she heads a civilian unit) but there is every chance that it will come to light. Financial probity is important because you have access to sensitive information and "secrets" or people open to bribes are a risk to security.

Thanks for the replies, it is very much appreciated.

This is how they word it:
Applicants must not be declared bankrupt with outstanding debts, having outstanding county court judgements against them or be subject to a current Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA). If you have any of these then it is likely that your application will be refused.
And this is all it says about how they go about it:
Vetting - security checks on yourself, your family and any declared associates will take place.

I wouldn`t dream of lying about anything but the application form (which I have been wading through for the last few hours), doesn`t ask for any declarations at all. So I am presuming they will do a credit check and a CRB. If someone asks me what debts and CCJ`s I have had in the distant past, I honestly would not be able to recall them, they are so long ago, I just know I had some when I was a struggling single mum. Within the last 6 years I have probably had some defaults on a couple of credit cards, where there hasn`t been enough money in the bank to pay the DD.
I have a full time job currently which is good but going nowhere with poor pay for very hard work, and I know I can do this and I can put together a good application - I guess if they find anything they don`t like it will just be a `Thanks for applying but no thanks`.

There is nothing to stop you asking them and explaining why you are worried or unsure! As I said, the checks are to assess you as a security risk (will you take £2k to give that piece of information to Mr. XX?), and your chances are not harmed by asking about it. You can even ring their HR without giving your name and ask! If they never accepted anyone who had bounced a DD then half the police force would be out, never mind the civilian force.

One simple way round this would be to obtain details of your CCJs, and pay them.
Then they are no longer outstanding.

I think you are only allowed to hold political opinions that the state approve of as well .
