amd v's intel ? new pc for cctv

hi there , i'm after a new pc solely to record from cctv using a usb2 cctv dvr as it's going to be stuck away in a cupboard i'm not too fussy about anything else other than having a decent sized hard drive- don't need a monitor either as i'll be viewing it on my existing monitor and tv.(although if it came bundled, i wouldn't say no :p )

it recommends a pentium4 2ghz , 256 ram and at least 70gb hd ........ so my question is what would be a comparable amd ? as i've seen a few dell pc's e520, e521 which have AMD Athlon 64 X2 Processor 4200 (2.20Ghz, 2x512K - so how does this compare ?
can anyone recommend any other cheap base models?

thanks

The Athlon would be fine, it is a better processor than the Pentium 4.
It's my problem, it's my problem

  • I was under the impression that the athlon even in its single core form is a better option than the P4 of an equivalent speed and requires much less power producing significantly less heat. The P4's are known for running hot and using alot of power.

In a cupboard this heat issue will be much more significant and you probably should fit some sort of ventilation.

I'm sure an athlon would be fine and the dual core is probably overkill but will do the job fine.

I'd just get a small form factor second hand/refurbed base unit, they go for £60-£100 nowadays.

Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • An AMD XP2000 should be around the same as a Pentium 4 2 ghz. Any computer with an AMD Sempron 2800+or an Intel Celeron 2.8ghz and above would be faster anyway. I would go for the an AMD Sempron or Athlon 64 as these will run cooler than the equivalent Pentium 4 and consume less power as a result. The Pentium 4 runs very hot!! The Intel Core2 processors on the other hand are faster than the equivalent AMD X2 processors and also are cooler and require less power!!

The P4 Northwood cpu's are ok. They still use quite a bit of power, but they tend not to get very hot. It's the Prescott based P4's you have to watch out for.

  • The Northwoods are OK but an Athlon 64 will still run cooler.
