Options
Hi all

I was going to be getting married in 2013 but my mum is iller than we though :( so we need to bring the wedding forward to next year. I think we have in mind where we want to get married and have the recption.

Does anyone have any tips to help things along in such a short space of time. Were looking at either May or June next year.

Any cost cutting ideas would be great.

  • I don't know what kind of wedding you're having.

But we decided in Feb this year to get married Aug just gone. My parents told us last xmas they were coming this Aug on holiday (I'm from Australia & it was my parents 1st time visiting us in England).

So we decided to end the holiday with our wedding. So we organised it in a very short space of time.

So I'll just list some things we did:

    1. My dress was from monsoon wedding section. Orginally £180, in the sale for £90
    2. Wedding center pieces = 50p vases from ikea, fake teal gerbra with teal, pearl and silver beads in the bottom.
    3. Wedding invites printed through company on ebay for £27. I got teal card, butterfly cutter and gems and jazzed the invites up
    4. Photographer for £50, found through facebook (local). Just set up her business last xmas, wanted wedding experience and just wanted travel cost covering. She did the whole day for us and photos were fab. She only wanted £30 but we were soooo impressed we gave her £50. I also had a photographer for free for 1.5 hrs, he is using our photos to advertise his business, though not naming us.

    I'll leave it at that...

Good luck, it can be done. We well mostly me had a fab time making stuff and finding bargains and our wedding was great.

Thanks :) we did want some time to plan but oh well.Sounds like you had a fab day. Were doing it on a budget but need to show my oh the wedding and reception venues to see what he thinks, fingers crossed.
  • For cost cutting there is nothing better than planning it short notice so that's good for you! :)

Make sure you remember when haggling with potential buyers that they will either get your money, or no money if you're getting married in a couple of months, it's unlikely that someone else will fill the slot (or so they will debate).

If you have your wedding slightly earlier, say April - it is "out of season" so you are more likely to get better deal. You could get married on Easter Friday, or on the Jubilee weekend and make use of days that aren't Saturday (the most expensive day) because people will still have the time off work.

Weddings tend to get busier in the new year because people get engaged at Christmas and New Years, so I'd try and book your "big costs" soon - the venue, Church, and photographer.

I've noticed wedding items on eBay auctions are going very cheaply, presumably because there aren't many brides shopping around at the moment, so you might be able to pick up a dress, centrepieces etc quite cheap.

After Christmas will be a great time to stock up on any wedding frivolities you want, like Christmas boxed chocolates truffles that you can take out and use in favours (if you want favours that is), and bridesmaids gifts etc if you want any of those too.

Remember the most important thing about the day is that you will be committing, in front of everyone you love including your Mum, to be together for the rest of your lives. If you start to panic about costs try and remember what's truly important.... Does it really matter if you have ushers? Wont they be there supporting your husband anyway? Do you need to buy everyone wine at dinner if you're paying for the food?

We did ours on a budget. Whole thing for £2,700. That is everything including craft items like mentioned to thank you cards and gifts for people.

My cake was free, friend made it. 6" top cake with cupcakes underneath. Wedding car was free as hubby to be at the time uncle offered.

Here are some photos just to give you an idea:

Wedding car again. Me in my £90 wedding dress. £30 shoes from next.

Oh and we got married in a quiet village pub that had a function room. £300 it cost to hire from 11am - 11pm.

Wouldn't of changed a thing. Enjoy, its loads of fun. I even had our wedding album made cheapily on ebay and again jazzed it up with teal butterflies & gems. Hey I've even got 150 wedding photos printed online for £7.45 as I went through 3 companies that all offered 50 prints for free just had to pay p/p. So now in the process of creating our wedding album.

Thanks guys, some great ideas and love the pics :) have been keeping an eye out on ebay to.
  • Hi OP, we got engaged in July and married 10 weeks later this September and we had such a happy happy day. My parents health is precarious and having them there meant the world to me.
We married on a Friday - you might find more venues available at short notice and a little cheaper too. Only one person couldn't get time off work.
Friends made various things as wedding presents - the cake, the afternon English tea we served as the reception. Others brought small posies of flowers form their gardens on the day to fill the little vases on the tables: that looked so pretty.
Our own preference was to keep everything simple and not get caught up in many extras, which meant we didn't get stressed by the shortness of time. But obviously we were happy with that and you might have certains you just really really want.
We used a small venue licensed for weddings so we could have everything in one place so the elderly or frail/ill didn't have to worry about travelling between the two.
We didn't have loads of bridesmaids or ushers but different friends and family just filled those roles anyway, and were glad to do so without the hassle of special clothes etc. We utilised different peoples strengths and everyone was delighted to help.

Don't be afraid to bring it even earlier - April can be a lovely month. You won't regret bringing it forward and be getting on with married life all the sooner. Best thing we've ever done:D.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once

  • Me and my partner got engaged about 2 weeks ago and we've already organised a majority of our wedding which will be on the 6th May 2012. We're getting married in an art gallery (which has been booked, along with the registrar) and we've booked our reception venue. We're having champagne at the art gallery, which we're supplying ourselves, so this brings down costs. We're having afternoon tea for wedding breakfast, and an evening buffet, so this makes things a lot cheaper. Also, because we've decided to get married on a Sunday (bank holiday monday is the next day, so no real problem for guests) the cost to hire the venue was halved. I'm putting my bridesmaids in high street dresses and I've been scanning second hand dresses on the preloved website. I'm lucky as my future mother in-law will be making our cake, my aunt used to be a florist and my aunt to be is a hairdresser, and I'm going to get my bridesmaid to do my makeup and I've got a work colleague doing mates rates on photography (he is pro - don't worry!) - so it's all a bit of a bargain. We've got everything we need, so we're going to ask, if guests to want to give us a gift, that they donate to the honeymoon contribution. I'm getting invites from Vista (at approx 37p each - which i think works out cheaper than making them, with a lot less hassle).
I'm genuinely shocked at how quickly we've pulled this all together, and that we won't be having to start our married life in wedding debt!! Hope sharing some of our wedding plans will help.
  • Oh.. also, I'm going to ask a family friend if we can use their nice car, and I've found heart shape lolly pops (8 for £2.69), which i thought would make nice favors at aquarterof.co.uk

Just remember that the most important thing the people who share your day.

In years to come you won't remember the table centre pieces, the bridesmaid's frocks, the cake etc.

You will laugh at your dress, hair and guests clothes, you will laugh at the "wrong" things people said and the mishaps that happened.

These are what will make your day.

My mother died less than 2 years after my wedding and my father 2 years later. Them being there is what I remember. I'm glad that my father was able to stand on my dress and I could hear a tear as I left the house. I remember my my mother bringing me champangne and scramble eggs in bed for breakfast in the morning. Oh and there was my little niece lifting up her dress and showing the whole congregation her new knickers!
