Tesco £4 or £6 off next £40/£50 shop criteria

Dear fellow MSE readers.
Has anyone figured out how this works?. I usually use my non Tesco debit card to pay for Tesco groceries, and present my Tesco card to collect the shopper-points. I noticed that if I fail to use this method to shop at Tesco for a couple of weeks or more, ie. go to Asda instead, go on holiday, or pay at Tesco with cash having forgotten my cards, I seem far more likely to get a till receipt that offers £4 off my next £40 Tesco grocery shop (time limited). This also seems to apply to the 5p per litre petrol fuel discount offers. Bit frustrating knowing that having spent £50, I need go spend another £40 within a week or so to claim the discount. I plan to keep a log of my Tesco trips, to see if I can figure out their system. Apologies if this has been posted previously, I tried searches, but could find no obvious link.
