Electoral Roll

Good afternoon,

Wonder if I can ask for some help please.

I moved into my existing property 5 years ago. I applied with my current bank (who I have banked with for the last 11 years) for a 2nd mortgage on a new property, as I am going to rent property 1 out.

Went to see my bank, who looking at my outgoings and salary etc said - no problem, you will easily get a mortgage, we'll just send your application off to our mortgage centre and it will be ok in the next couple of days.

I then get a call which says "you are not on the electoral roll are you?" Which I am not, call it nieive or stupid or whatever, but living in a predominantly "One party area" who get 88% of the vote - I always deemed it irrelevant whether I voted or not, so never filled my electoral register form in.

Now, my bank credit score with Equifax - who, apparently, you need to be on the electoral roll with.

So basically, my bank are telling me that according to their mortgage underwriters - I actually do not exist at the address that I have owned for the past 5 years. Even though I have banked at that address, had a loan from my bank to that address and have credit at that address.

I have been onto Experian and, fortunately, I do exist with them and have a good credit rating.

I can get onto the electoral roll but it will take some time. So woman in mortgage call centre is saying get on electoral roll, Equifax call centre are not very helpful - so stalemate.

Has this happened before? Any advice please?

Thanks for your help in advance

Unfortunately, you have no choice but to get on the roll asap. It doesn't take long to get on the electoral roll at all.

    Download the form:
    https://www.aboutmyvote.co.uk/register_to_vote/electoral_registration_applica.aspx

Fill it in, stick it in the post. Job done. You'll be on there within a week or so.

Why do you have such a problem with it?
You had me at your proper use of "you're".
  • My council only do electoral roll additions 1 x a month apparently. Which would be 1st November I guess. How do they then transfer this information to Equifax? And then also, can Equifax "back date" my credit to get a credit score on me?

    How long would this take?

My mortgage application is pending now and offer been accepted, I just assumed it would be a long drawn out process.

    Thanks
  • Just telephone your district council and they will stick you on. Takes no time at all.

The electoral roll isn't updated during this time of the year. Its updated once a month throughout most of the year, but during the annual canvas is not updated.
The next update is 1 December - and it can then take another month to weekds or so for this to be reflected on your credit file.

  • It wouldn't happen by 1st November anyway !

Process is once you apply the registration is published for objections for a period of 14 days, it is then entered on next update (if no objection).

1st December is earliest date you will show and as Tixy points out there is uesually a few days after until distribution to other sources is possible.

  • Yup, get on it ASAP as lenders will want to see you on it - as others have said, it'll now be on/after 1st December for you to get on it.

In the future, even if you don't want to vote, always fill in your electoral forms, return them & check you're on the roll - you never know when you might need to apply for credit and don't want to have to wait to do this.
