Please have you any suggestions as to protect internet banking accounts against these new viruses? Is it a good idea to download Rapport? I do all my banking on the internet but do worry about the security of it.
I have Avast Free on the computer and Firefox. I haven't downloaded the latest version of it yet (Firefox) - should I do this rightaway? I also have an adblocker on there. Is there a simple solution to this problem? I don't want to go back to conventional banking because I do a lot of transfers within both accounts. I have a card reader with Barclays but the Santander account is just a passnumber.

Cunning cyber-criminals are designing malicious bugs that, once sneaked into a PC via the internet, masquerade as online banking pages.
Experts say the pages are almost indistinguishable from the genuine site - nothing at all suggests they're fake. "
The advice from the article seems to be to log on and if you are asked to enter anything different than usual, close the browser and run an anti virus scan
I expect it improves the case for real time scanners etc0 -

Thanks but the article states that these new viruses imitate the banks' pages and the URL is the same. There is nothing to suggest its not the bank page. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0 -

Thanks but their advice is not all that reassuring as you may not be asked to enter anything different from your usual passnumbers etc.The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0 -
I've just checked; I've got a real time shield activated on Avast. Will that help? The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0

I think what the other Posters are saying is be vigilant and that is really the summary message from the article too.
Be suspicious of anything on your internet banking that looks out of the ordinary. For example, if it asks you to enter more information than usual, or in a different way.
If you're unsure, don't enter anything. Log-off, close your browser down entirely, then run an antivirus progamme (see above) to make sure you're not infected.
If you're still not 100 per cent sure that it's your bank's genuine page, most will have a dedicated internet banking helpline. Give them a call and describe what you see on screen.
Always log in using the correct address/URL as a PP suggested, don't rely on spurious addresses that may be provided by a search engine.
Check your accounts each time you log in to make sure they look OK.
With Barclays use your PIN sentry. Check for Santander I believe they will use a mobile text back to provide you with a one time PIN.
Don't ever input anything like your ATM pin.
By all means use Rapport - it is an added layer and may slow down your PC a little.
Avast is reputedly pretty slick. I know Barclays provide Kapinsky. At least if you use their AV then SHOULD you get hit then at least you will have a stronger case against them.
It is in the Banks interests to work with the AV industry to ensure that these attempts are picked and stopped so I am sure there is intense Cyber vigilance going on.
