I used Bobs Books for my wedding album, recommended by my photographer.
The result looks fantastic - some of the pictures are spread over two pages and the page lies flat (ie doesn't dissapear down the spine)
There were a few things I found annoying about the software, but they updated this just as I'd finished mine (doh!) Otherwise it was really easy to use.
Once I'd got it set up it I was able to save a copy, lose a few pages and swap some pictures around to make versions especially for our parents, which they loved.:D

Most photo books are produced using some form of digital print, a group of printing methods in which the image is transferred directly from a computer to the printing machine without using a static print form like printing plates. Digital direct print uses systems like Indigo, inkjet and laser printing, which from the standpoint of individual printing offer very good value for money. Because digital prints use a screening method, resulting in visible print dots or pixelation.

When high-quality pictures are needed, only exposure on real photographic paper can provide a correspondingly high quality. For photo paper albums special photographic paper is glued together back to back and bound as a book in which the pages lie flat as descirbed by @wiggychick. I use FotoInsight for photographic paper lay-flat photo albums.
