Please may I add myself to this challenge. I would like to try and save 7k in 2012!
This will be interesting, I can save up to a point but I seem to reach the magic number (3k) and go spend crazy!! First it was updating the kitchen, then the lounge and this time a commuter scooter and bathroom paint LOL.
I think this challenge might just be the thing to get me over the 3k hump!Emergency savings: 4600

Well done on *almost* clearing the car loan! Definitely more sensible than keeping it as savings (as long as you can get your hands on some cash in a genuine emergency!) £1300 is loads to clear in one month :T
Decided that I could rely on my overdraft in the short term. It was surprising how much my individual savings pots (car, general, pin money) added up to, and suddenly I realised that I could quickly pay off the car loan in the next pay month, and our company pays December early so I get a nice wedge of cash for emergencies (what would go into jans savings), so obviously I need to not spend that ideally, but means less likely to have cash poor emergencies!)0 -
Can I join too please? Will aim for 12k, though it will be hard as pay is only 21k before tax/student loan/pension come out. Have checked and somehow managed to pay off £11,700 in two weeks short of a year when I was on 16k so I must be able to do it somehow! I honestly don't know how I did it before...
Am in the dreaded south east and saving for a house so want to save as much as possible so I don't end up living in a shoebox.

welcome to all the newbiew and thanks to slowlyfading for organising this challenge.
I am busy preparing for this challenge and wanted to pass on a few tips to get us all started. I have been buying co-op savings stamps all year anyway for xmas shopping as you get £2 free. A lot of supermarkets do this (Asda) where you save £48 and they give you £2, I know its only £2 but my philosophy is that pennies make pounds and that £2 can be put into your savings pot.
When I do my monthly budgetting, I round up each bill (eg life insurance £92.09 would be calculated as £100) when the direct debit goes through I sweep the difference into my savings and it all adds up.
I have a wardrobe in my garage that I bought at a jumble sale for £2 which did for my little one when she was little and now houses bargainacious tins! If I see a good deal (eg 4 tins branston beans for £1 in lidl) I fill my boots and store them in there.
Think outside the box for staorage eg under the bed, top of the wardrobe, square storage not round will make more space, space in your house is money so use it wisely...
I find this time of the year very good for bargains so try to fill up on them, come january I find that the supermarkets are very expensive and seem to know that many people do not have any money so once the yellow sticker stuff is gone it is pricey.
I am trying not to buy anything at the mo, using up what I have and maximising everything. My fridge is on the blink and I rang John Lewis as it is still under warranty to complain that I have to wait a week to get it fixed and they mentioned a goodwill gesture so when pushed I managed to get £30 from them. I expected vouchers but they are refunding me cash to cover the cost of the food thrown away so I will save this, very pleased
