"ILoveSaving Don't know how people manage to save a thousand in a month? Most years I never manage to save a thousand, obviously doing something wrong."
Hi IloveSaving
I think it all depends on your personal situation.
Are you part of a couple, what are your outgoings, incomes, do you have to run 2 cars? Fuel, Food, cigerettes, alcohol, odd days out, takeaways, household bills, it all adds up!
My personal situation is a bit different, single, I'm a lodger in a house, minimal outgoings, as dont go out much, smoke or drink, so I am able to save £1000 a month!
But I know this is likely to change, when I have a house/partner/kids/pets/other responsibilities.
All I can say is try your best - there is no competition on here other than the one we all have with ourselves!
Dont be so hard on yourself, particularly when you have other stuff going on, such as the roof repairs!

Thanks Lea!
You are right of course. I have to get things into perspective. We do have a mortgage, 2 kids, 2 cats, 2 bunnies, 2 cars etc. (They all need feeding!).
When I think how far me and hubby have come that's the thing to keep in mind. We started with nothing but student debt and no jobs. So nothing to complain about. Just got to get rid of our mortgage that's our goal.
Whatever I manage to save is a bonus. Don't think I'll get to £5,000 this year but lets see what the next 6 months brings. xx :rotfl::rotfl:Currently debt free (for 4 years) - ISA Savings now £4,050.56Save 12k in 2012 Challenge - £3215.17 / 3000k (Member 159)

ILoveSaving - our finances have turned around in the last few years and we are now in a fortunate position to be able to save more each month.
When we were first married in 1996 I was on £14k per year and Dh £9k, when DD came along, things were tight and we always had credit card bills, no money left to save each month and always into the over draft. We had moved house in 2003 and had a bigger mortgage etc so things were still tight.
I was made redundant in 2006 and although it was a real body blow, I got a £20k redundancy package which paid off our debts and gave us a real head start. Since then I was lucky enough to find a good job as has DH and we earn £42k and £26k respectively. We now have DS after an 11 year gap and as soon as I found out I was pregnant I started saving hard so we could manage during my maternity leave. I took 8 months off and once I started back in spring 2011 I decided that it was time to tackle the mortgage and building up savings again, which is why we are in a position to save ..... but believe me it hasn't always been like this.

Hi kandfs mam and thanks for your response.
I am usually very optimistic and dont let things get me down, but hubbys redundancy is looming in our house too. Hundereds of people have already been paid off at his place, which is not good. So trying to reign everything in just in case he is next.
Glad to hear you got through your redundancy to find work at the other end.
Good luck for you too.Currently debt free (for 4 years) - ISA Savings now £4,050.56Save 12k in 2012 Challenge - £3215.17 / 3000k (Member 159)

Emergency Fund £00 -
My figures to date:
Jan £500
Feb £500
March £700
April £440
May £800
June £260.00
First 6 months total = £3200.
Total in ISA = £6400
In May/June I had to spend about £1500 on my car but also received a windfall of £1000 leaving the £1k "safety money" in my current account intact. I've really struggled to keep track of how well I've been doing with all the ups and downs and a new ISA and what have you. A trip to the US with work gave me a week's break from spending, thankfully, but....
I'm going to be road tripping around California and Nevada in October/November which could cost up to £2k and will really hamper me reaching my targets. I might get up to £5k still if I'm really good, but that would mean spending my £1k safety money. This is mostly for my car, I have a £1500 overdraft so should be covered in case of emergencies!
My 12/13 ISA has £4500 contributions left, so would be cutting it fine to fill it by April with the CA/NV holiday - must try!
I have three bags worth of things to put on ebay plus some bigger items like a cross trainer (too big for my small flat, back to running)

There areI sent a lot of PMs last month to everyone on the list and the ones who haven't replied were taken from the spreadsheet - there are still a lot more who don't really update too often either
