I have just received a copy of my contract and it's a not a pretty one . . . Really not looking forward to returning it but beggars in this economy can't be choosers . . .

  • Only having 2 weeks notice of shifts ( used to having 4 or indeed 6 if the rota maker was on a roll)
Nothing for Bank Hoidays, just an ordinary working day ( used to having overtime or time back in leiu when previous companies didn't pay double bubble)
If I want a Bank Holiday off it has be booked as a days holiday
Far too many mentions of deductions from wages ( shortages, breakages etc )

I've worked in retail since I was 17 and I've never come across one like this and I've worked for Primark LOL !

Could it be that the 2 weeks notice thing is just a minimum that they put in the contract? If their scheduler is good, they may be able to issue them earlier than that. Or, on the brightside, a 2 week notice may mean that you need to give much less notice for holidays / other leave than you have previously?

I assumed that the bank holiday arrangement was standard across the retail sector? I know that my Stepdaughter has to book the day off as holiday, as do her friends who work in high street shops. I take it thats not you've been accustomed to. How many paid holidays do you get a year?
You had me at your proper use of "you're".

  • I think my real unease with the place steams from the fact that I'm going do be doing a supervisory for less money than my previous company paid sales assistants, and on reading the contract my unease about this place grows . . . I've pulled out all the stops to find alternative employment so hopefully it won't come down to me working there as it's the biggest mismatch in company & employee ever . . .

To be honest it sounds like a fairly standard contract for retail these days. Also bear in mind contracts often sound worse than the reality, clauses are put in by the employer to protect themselves but that doesn't mean they'll always enforce them to the letter.

Doing rotas only 2 weeks in advance may mean they are more flexible if you want certain days off. I've tried doing rotas more than a couple of weeks ahead and it doesn't work as employees (especially part time college students) keep changing their availability.

With min wage and holiday entitlement going up, plus Sundays and BH's becoming standard retail days, many retailers just treat every day as the same for pay.

I'd say give it a go and see how they actually treat you in practice. Retail - like most industries - have frozen pay rates for the last couple of years but it will always be an industry with a minimum of pay and perks. Long term it may be time to look elsewhere, although I understand short term there isn't much going.
