Modern Vs Not so Modern venues!

Hello All,
Myself and my OH have narrowed it down to a venue we'd like to see. This has been based on many things, including the price!
From the photos the function rooms looks a little dated but i'm confident with a bit of sprucing it'll look superb and i've found other evidence as to how people have transformed it. OH isn't so convinced as yet.
Otherwise the venue is pretty much perfect - a restaurant/hotel, near a river, gorgeous views, huge carpark and a hotel for people who might need to stay. We've eaten there before [although going to go again to test it out now!] and it was truely delicious food.
I just wondered what people have found with such venues? The main problem is the dated carpet I think that's what has caught OH's attention.
Thanks,
Alipops x

Our venue has a hideous carpet too, and I was stupidly getting quite upset about it, tell my partner (after the umpteenth time I complained that every one was going to hate it) ask me to recal the carpet at two weddings we went to over the summer, I couldn't, and then he produced pictures, where you could see this horrible blue and gold flowerly thing and red and gold swirls. I didn't notice it on their days so less worried now.
Plus I'm going to look amazing, the boys going to look amazing, our centre pieces, bunting, sweetie table and all that other stuff is going to be fantastic. No ones going to care.
(To be honest, my daughter is prob going to steal the show, but I'll forgive her!)Thoughts become things!0 -
Thanks!
We did have some stunning modern venues in mind but the cost was nearly mind blowing. However, this venue we both do really like and it is practical as well as affordable. I hope when we see it in the flesh we still feel them same!0 -
For me, carpets were one of my really picky points. I don't like horrible ones and I always remember them and spot them in photos. I didn't go to the venues who's carpets I didn't like!! Apart from one, because it was very very cheap.
I looked at one wedding venue (not the one with horrible carpets) and the whole hotel was tired, I could just tell, and I was warned in advance by reviews on Trip Advisor, that it needed updating. Paint flaking in places, worn carpets and upholstery and I loved it anyway, it had that well worn, well loved feel like an old teddy bear. It certainly didn't put me off, but we had an amazing venue that trumped all others in the end
Having done it all now, I'd use a venue that had a wonderful attitude above anything else like carpets or location. If they truly let you feel like they're going to do all they can to give you an amazing day, that's the most important thing.0 -
Our venue had a horrible carpet too - it's so that stains don't show as easily! It really bugged me throughout the meal - but when I mentioned it to my friends after the wedding, they hadn't paid any attention to it! I was only mentioning it to them as I was saying that it was the only thing that I would have changed - as everything else was wonderful and I could not fault the staff, service or food at all!
Places with nice carpets don't exist (or I haven't found them) - so you'd have to go for all wooden floors, which tend to be more modern venues, have had more cash thrown at them - so are more expensive! I'd certainly consider the carpet, but also consider all other character and service as Maggie says! No harm in visiting and having a half hour chat!
PS - not many photos will show the carpet. They will be focusing on your face, and the full length ones can be cropped to show little carpet, or they'll be taken in another location anyway!Virtual Sealed Pot Challenge #148 - £59.93

We looked at modern and not so modern.
Although the older properties were a bit tired and dated we found they offered greater flexibility. Whereas the new modern venues had a package that you had to stick to. Plus the more modern places tended (in our case) to be a lot more expensive.
I think its personal preference but we took the view once we had dressed the venue with chair covers, candles, flower etc it would look lovely.
Like previous posters have said people wont remember or notice things like the carpets or cracks etc.
Plus our venue has a wow factor which over-rode our worries of it being a bit dated. Sayng that Step son to be liked the newer places as there swimming pools were nicer!Turning our clutter to top up our house deposit: £3000/£303.05 we're on our way!0 -
Does anyone remember the decor of friends weddings, carpet, chairs, table centre pieces etc? I certainly don't!0

I would go with the venue that gives the best service and food for the price you can afford....in my mind you can make somewhere a little dated look very pretty with softer lighting and creative decorations..but what you cant easily do is make the food nicer or more of it if you opt for somewhere that looks more flash or clean lines or whatever but only serves ok food...
What I will say is though ...is that there is difference between...run down and in need of modernisation with poor maintanance and ....old but looked after and clean...sometimes places are not to peoples specific tastes but if they are clean then that makes a lot of difference
For me I would opt for the delicious food and good setting over something modern that serves reasonable food...
Theres always the possibility that before your wedding the venue has a redecoration and even changes the carpet....frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!
