Hello,
Definately contact GHD (Customer Service team on 0845 330 1133) - I did with my 4 year old GHD's, paid (I think) £20 to have them repaired but they sent me brand new ones!
This happened with my hairdresser too....i think its their policy.Women marry men hoping they will change, men marry women hoping they won't! Inevitably they will both be disappointed.Albert Einstein:smileyhea0 -

I sent an email last night via the GHD site and put in the registration number so they know how old they are and when I registered them etc.
I also bought a new pair for DD last night from Amazon. £79 delivered as DD has NUS extra card.
Then there will be no panic that DD can't straighten her hair again if the old ones can be repaired we'll have a spare~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)

I had no response to my email so I rang this morning.
They are out of guarantee so they said I can send them back to them and they will assess them for repair and cost etc. They gave me a case number etc. so I will send them back and see how much they want to repair before deciding whether to proceed or not.
New ones arrived today so DD happy but the old ones would be good as a spare.~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)

We sent some GHDs back to them to have them assessed, they were "beyond economic repair" and we were given the choice of just letting them bin them or paying £X (sorry can't remember how much but around £10) to have them returned. OH is in electronics so thought it would be worth it, got back a brand new set because they had lost ours! What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0

When my GHD's broke, like you I was really sceptical about repairs but just couldn't afford a new pair. Found a company online, did a bit of research and bit the bullet. It still cost about 30 quid but they came back totally fixed and even serviced. I wouldn't say they were like new or anything but a year on and they are still working fine. I have had my pair for 4 years now and fixed once, I know they will give up one day but in the meantime I would highly reccommend repairs if you can find somewhere you are happy with.
I can't remember the website but I'll have a look and see if I can find it again.GC 2012 - £192.84/£200
