"UK trade deficit narrows as export hit record high".

"The deficit shrank to £7.8bn, compared with a revised shortfall of £8.2bn in July and market forecasts of a deficit of £8.8bn, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.

Exports rose 0.6pc in July to a record £25.5bn, while imports fell 0.7pc to £33.3bn.

The value of exports rose 1.3pc to £25.5bn, the highest figure since comparable records began in 1998.This offset muted gains for the value of imports, which rose 0.3pc to £42.6bn.

Economists said the figures offered hope of overall growth between July and September, but warned fears still persist over prospects for exports looking ahead, given the problems in the debt-laden eurozone.

Nida Ali, economic adviser to the Ernst & Young ITEM Club, said: “Although August’s data is encouraging, the outlook continues to be fraught with risks. So far exports have been one of the bright spots on the economic horizon but, with the global outlook having turned for the worse, the prospects for UK trade have dimmed considerably".
