Hair Dye for Allergy Sufferer

Since the birth of my second child, I've twice tried to dye my hair using popular brand products found in Boots, but found I'm now allergic to hair dye.

Can anyone recommend a hair dye line that is allergy sufferer friendly? (Hope that makes sense.)

As my hair is over 80% grey, it needs to be a permanent dye. And for it not to cost the earth, please.

I use Surya hair dye, I use the cream because it's easier just like a normal dye but you can also get it in powder form. It's semi-permanent but I've got about 70-80% grey and it covers all the grey no problem.

It's not cheap at £8.95 a bottle but if you've got short hair you can get 2 applications out of it, it stores until next time you don't have to throw it away once opened like normal hair dyes. I've got a chin length bob and get 2 applications out of each bottle.

I have a friend who is allergic to PPD (No idea what it stands for!) which is found in hair dyes and apprentley it causes a reaction for quite a lot of people.

But after that tragic story in the papers this week, I would defo say do a patch test before hand (something I never bother to do )

Sanotint - which is what I found on the website above contains a related product to PPD, which can also cause allergies. It is in such tiny writing on the tube I could hardly see it - and spent half an hour looking for the ingredients in the product!!!!

Like usual PPD containing hair dyes it's probably safe for most people as far as we know!....but it may also trigger severe allergic reactions in a minority since it contains a related chemical to PPD. I can't spell it and can't type it here because it's in such tiny writing it hurts my eyes to look at it - and i don't wear glasses!

They produce other colourants that don't contain this chemical but are not recommended for covering patches of grey.

Can't blame the companies because there is nothing that covers grey properly apart from these chemicals but I'm interested to see what they use in the US...where i've heard that PPD is banned. Don't know how true this is though.
