Student nurse debt

Hi all

Just after some advice which someone on here may be able to give. I'm a second year child student nurse and before i started my training i had some debts which appear to have escalated somewhat due to my lack of income, being a student and all that!!
I have a loan which is due to finish in Jan 2009 which i estimate is at around £4,800 which i pay £226 a month and the other debt i have is a barclaycard which is currently at £3300 though it has been cut up and therefore i no longer use it. I have been working over the xmas period and am due to get paid monday which should be about £300 which i can use to pay towards my barclaycard. Unfortunately though due to my student training i am going to no longer be able to commit to this job so will be losing out on this extra income. My current bursary income is £556 so i really can't pay off anymore than i already am. I am paying at the moment £130 a month off my barclaycard so as you can see i'm not having much money left over. I am due to complete my training in december 2008
Thanks all in advance,
Shell,
ps, have gone down the ebay selling route!!...barely have anything left to sell!!!
Does anyone have any advice, ?

no advice but I am a nurse and I think the bursary system is so unfair for the nurse training.
have you signed on at any nurse banks or agencies as a support worker? the odd night shift can pay quite well. and you dont have to commit to any hours - only work when it suits. I know its hard when you are trying to study and do your placements but most students I work with do that.

Yes agency/bank work can really boost your income. Even a few long day Sundays for an auxillary can bring in an extra £300-400 pcm. I work for an agency (nurse) and the rates of pay are pretty good.
    good luck!

saturday night shift is the big earner if you can get it.

or what about baby sitting agencies. with your childrens nursing training you would be in demand I'm sure. again it would be casual working to suit yourself.

  • Hi and hugs from another nurse. I am in a whole lot of debt too.
I work with NHSP agency, have you registered with them? Dogrose's baby sitting idea sounds good.
    Feel free to pm me.

  • Cheers guys for your advice, i am still working part time at the moment but as i said that is due to finish soon. I have tried to get some bank shifts with the hospital but they are not employing anyone at present. I think the next step is to try the agency's and see what i can find with them. Keep your fingers crossed for me and thanks to all of you for your advice, oh and hugs ;)

I would go for the agency option,
PCTs and hospitals are on pretty much a total recruitment freeze because of the huge shake up in the NHS!
    Good luck babe.

It's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.

some agencies pay more than NHS anyway. any nursing homes nearby? Have to say not always the greatest places to work but if you chose carefully....most will have a list of casual workers to cover for holidays etc.
