Private Rents in England "Unaffordable"

I think "unaffordable" might be today's "poverty":
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-15284892
Homes in these areas cost more than 35% of median average local take-home pay - the level considered unaffordable by Shelter's Private Rent Watch report.
I would imagine that many mortgages could be higher than this.

Exactly what I thought. I reckon I could be housing minister:
"Essentially, the last government's record on house building was woeful with the level of house building the lowest sine 1823. We will be speaking to local councils to gently encourage them to possibly consider maybe looking at building more houses. And why, only this Tuesday, I'll be meeting with the CEO of large construction company to talk about building more houses. He'll tell me that even if they did build houses no one wants to buy them at these high prices and even if they did they couldn't get a mortgage. I'll hear that, agree with him, and write a paper on it. To be honest we're Torys and none of us rent anyway, so I'm not sure it's that big an issue? Good day to you all."

On the plus side you get to masturbate in the lounge whenever and as often as you like. Swings and roundabouts really.0 -

Only boys would instantly think of that as a benefit to living alone. Playing Boney M and Abba without sarcastic comment and going to the loo with the bathroom door open are my top advantages. They are an EYESORES!!!!0

Interesting that rewired thanks the masturbating in the kitchen comment but not the one about the lounge. Is it possible that our silent friend is a cucumber fan?0

Somewhere around 100,000 houses were built last year, and the vast majority of that was social housing.
The biggest decline has been the lack of building for the private sector, and that is primarily because of the mortgage famine.
The only way significantly more homes will get built is if lending improves, be that lending to BTL or lending to FTB-s.
Builders won't build what they can't sell....“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.
Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”
