Free Requesting of Library Books

Options
Hiya

If you go to the city centre library they charge £1 to request a book. But if you go to the mobile van library you can request books for free.

They only charge when you get a library assistant to give you a hand at mine, I can do it online from home for free with my library system and at the library itself if I do it on a computer without any help.

Maybe its worth asking or checking your library website to see if they have an online service.

My Library is completely free, the only thing you pay for is late book fines.

  • At Manchester Libraries I can request them online for free too. It has saved me a fortune over the years as I see a book I fancy in a book store/online and order it form the library :-)

I think you will find that Leicester libraries do charge £1 for books to be ordered, but not to reserve what is in stock at other libraries. Being over 60yrs I don't even have to pay fines for books overdue which is great as I cannot always get to the library.

My library sends e-mail messages to let you know if you will be overdue in 3 days' time. So, if I'm too lazy to go to the library or haven't finished the books, I can renew online. I don't think they do a 'No fines for over-60's'. But it isn't required anyway.

I am very grateful for the e-mail reminder, however, and the fact that doing things online is so easy.

My library charges 60p for reserving online (anything, 60p each item) and £1 for reserving at the library enquiry desk (although I think this may because they send you a postcard to say its arrived when its done by this method). I just wish they would sort out their automatic renewal reminder scheme - I always got an email 2-3 days before my books were due up until the last couple of renewals when I got nothing and thus ran up £10 worth of fines. I checked my account and its still set for email reminders so I have no idea what is happening (no they aren't going in Junk either). My husband thinks I should query the fine but I think its still my responsibility to get my books back on time or renew them. Anyone had any success for querying something like this?

All you people are so lucky! It costs £1.20 to reserve at my library, online or in person! It used to be 89p but they increased it recently! Still cheaper than buying the book though!

My library charges for online reservations but it's free if you do it at the desk!

I have queried something similar and had my fine cancelled but it was only a couple of pounds. It seems to depend on the librarian who deals with it. A few weeks ago, I tried renewing over the phone and got a message saying the system was down. When I queried it the next day, they said they knew the system was down and I would have got a fine - but there was noting they could do about it! Maybe they've clamped down now because of the cuts. They've reduced their hours as well but at least they haven't closed it!
