Toilet rim cleaners for septic tanks?

Is there such a thing? Living in a community with a shared septic tank we are restricted in the type of toilet cleaners. So are there any rim blocks for septic tank systems or alternatives?

  • Hi,

I wasn't actually sure that you could use the rim blocks (however it has been years since we have used them due to a steady line of toddlers who feel the need to investigate them!)

This thread here seems to be helpful http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/good_housekeeping/290258-cleaning-products-if-you-have-a-septic-tank/AllOnOnePage

Anything apart from bleach tends to be ok - although most products normally state if they are safe for septic tanks. Like one of the posters on the linked thread I cannot understand how a product that claims to kill all germs can be safe to use in a septic tank as you need bacteria for it to function properly...

We nomally use Ecover... although you can normally smell (after a day or two) if you have used something that doesn't agree with your tank! (this happened when we first moved in, we had no experience of septic tanks before that!)
  • Hi,
I'd recommend Ecover too. I always use their products on boats too, in case any of the waste water leaks out of the onboard tank.

Don't know the answer myself but this thread has one or two ideas :)

Do you want this moved to in my home?
