MSE News: Don't get an online grocery shopping shock

As much as I hate defending Tesco their system does tell you. It comes up and says "To qualify you need to Change delivery slot as this promotion is only valid until xx/xx/2011" It says this in the shopping basket and for each individual offer. And it displays the actual price of the item in the description so it shouldn't bee too hard to work out, admittedly its a pain but not impossible to do.
Everything will be ok in the end, and if it isn't ok then it isn't the end0 -
As much as I don't agree with greed (re: the bottles of Pepsi) I think that its a bit presumptious to say that she was being greedy. I don't order online as I don't get what I order 90% of the time. I have a long standing eating disorder and whilst maintain a certain degree of health I do eat exactly the same thing every day. I would easily order 26 of something if I was trying to get my moneys worth for the items being delivered, not because I was thinking of eating it all at once but because it would save me shopping for 26 days or so.
How do you know this women wasn't shopping for a party? For neighbours who were putting all their shops together to save on separate deliveries? Or because she has a large family who will guzzle the stuff within a month- I know of people who shop once a month and yes it is possible.
One thing I can't get my head around though is why the supermarkets can't give the correct price at the end of a shopping bill online- they know when the offers end, its no secret. Why is it not possible for them to empart with a little money to get their sites to work properly? (Or is the cynical idea running through my mind correct...?)0 -
26 isn't greed if you're addicted. I popped into a Tesco the other month and bought four packs of their 24-cans, which would be 16 packs of 6... and I'd have bought more if I hadn't been feeling lazy. For me, those 96 cans were about a month's indulgence.
You stock up on stuff you get through, when you can .... so it lasts until the next time it's on at a good price. That's common sense, not greed.0 -
Had delivery from Asda on Tue, bought 2 cauliflowers at 50p and 1 kg carrots at 50p. Checked invoice, was charged 84p per cauliflower and 94p for 1 kg carrots. Checked website price showed 50p cauliflower and 50p 1kg carrots! Phoned Asda and was told would refund. Not the point! No excusse for this! Also, asked for substitutions and didn't get one. Had this happen with bread or milk as it did a few weeks I was one unhappy bunny. Live about 10 miles from store so find substitutions essential!
Had order deliverd from Tesco, now selling cheese from their cheese counter, cheese wrapped in cling film. Only 1 week to use and already dry. Saw cheese in bag did not check inside or would have returned. Phoned, was told you should have known it was from cheese counter wrapped in cling film! Counter, i.e. Counter Murry Australian Cheddar, at beginning indicated your ordering cheese wrapped in cling film from the cheese counter with short shelf life - I don't think so. Tesco has never sold cheese from their counter before so a full discription is required. Substituted kitchen towels, for own brand twice when asked not to substitute for own brand, cost more due to 4 pack sent not 6 pack as ordered! Bananas, onions and some other items get sent by number not weight, even if you order by weight, found I didn't get enough. Also, works in their favour if they send small bananas priced individually. Between your checking order and Tesco sending it out weight changes to individual item! :0(
Find online grocery shopping is not nearly as good as it was 2yrs ago!
Sorry all moaning, wanted to allert folks. Have a nice day!:0)0 -
Sainsburys have on their pages for certain products which are on offer 'for delivery dates up to 1st Nov'. You will pay for the goods at the same price as they are in the shops that day. Sometimes a product could be on a 2 for £5 deal one week. The following week, it could be on BOGOF or half price and you will benefit from that.0

The article was a bit scary about the loss of discounts, but reading the above most of the complained about points seems to be moot, perhaps the research really was not done properly. Thanks peeps to not put me off from trying these sites in the future
I don't understand the point opposing the 26 packs of beverage. I'm able to distinguish the brands' taste, and would not repeatedly buy something that I don't like, and can easily consume 2l a day - 26 bottles are gone in 2-3 weeks at most. Anyway, why wouldn't I be moneysaving and spend a single delivery charge for a month's worth? It gets on the same credit card bill anyway...
For that matter, those 10kg bags of rice seem ridiculous to me, but I have no trouble with anyone ever buying them!Enjoy the silence...0 -
One thing I HATE about Asda shopping online is
they take what you owe them from your bank BUT they also earmark th eoriginal cost which makes your account
show as overdrawn... they do it every time. I don't know why they can't just take ONE CORRECT PAYMENT!
You have to wat 6 days for it to clear as well.
One thing I LOVE about Asda shopping is
the freebies you often get cos the driver gave you someone elses shopping!
I've had 4 tins of Tuna and 8 jars of mint sauce (I will count this as compensation for them earmarking my money!)1,2 & 5p: Christmas day food £9.31
10 & 20p: misc savings £2.70
50p: Christmas presents £3.50
£2: holidays £2.000 -
The article is wrong. Sainsbury's show the prices and offers for day of delivery (so long as you book a time slot before you select items). The only variations on the estimated price will be due to weighed items and substitutions. This is one of the reasons I use Sainsbury's over Tesco.
This! And as people are pointing out sounds like tescos are the same. Pick your delivery date and it will adjust all the offers throughout the website to your delivery day's offers.
Not sure who researched and wrote this article but maybe they should put a little more time and effort into their job! Seems to be happening more lately especially the grocery acticles! The sainsbury brand match article is also very poorly written and has/had barrow loads of errors.0 -
I find it hard to find sympathy at such sheer greed.
(and could care less for the multitude of excuses as to why someone should buy so many at once...)
As for the article itself, only tried online shopping once, bought a couple (that's just a couple, not 26) of things that were on offer, only to find the full price charged when delivered - it was a while ago and was not made clear that the price would be charged on the day of delivery. Not something I'm willing to try again.
I don't think it's greedy. If you see a bargain and if it's something that you consume anyway and it's non-perishable then good on you!
I think MSE are using a very bad example with the pepsi to make the supermarkets look bad. I have lost count of the number of times on hotukdeals there has been an offer posted which is so good that people decide to place an order with the supermarket that only contains that one product. Anyone doing so is clearly placing that order to take advantage of an offer that the supermarkets have to get people through their doors. Of course, there is nothing wrong with people taking advantage - it's not illegal!
However, the T&Cs clearly state that you will be charged the price on the date of delivery and therefore the Pepsi addict has no reason to complain when the delivery person arrived...
For the average shopper who isn't abusing offers; sometimes they win and sometimes the lose. Asda have on a number of occasions been very generous with me. For example, nappies were on a 2 for £10 deal where a single pack was £7 so I ordered 2 pack. Only 1 pack arrived so I complained to the driver saying that I shouldn't pay £7 for something when it should effectively have cost £5. I was given the pack for free. Another time I ordered some of Asda's own chicken. It was substituted for Smart Price chicken. I rejected it. However, the guy told me to keep it and I wasn't charged for it.0 -

This is an important point.
If you place your order and it's £X but it's more when it arrives then question it and reject items that have gone up.
If you place your order and it's £X but it's less when it arrives then keep quiet.
If you place your order and a number of items are missing them
complain and get a refund.
If you place your order and a number of items you didn't order turn up then keep quiet.
A drive once told me that he had a delivery where the customer had requested 1 box of stella but there were 3 boxes in the order...Happy days!
I don't think that online supermarket shoppers really ever lose out...0
