Finding out if deceased paid NICs - how?

Looking into this BB1 form for my mother as my dad has passed.

One of the questions is - did he pay national insurance.

Answer: We don't know. How do we find out so we can answer yes or no?

I remember going to a money advisors house with him earlier in the year & they were discussing how my dad shouldn't be paying tax & he was given an R85 form.

Thing is, i don't have a clue whether he paid NI or how to find out.

Oh & in addition to this, he had been retired for 3 years - so he was no longer in work, not full time, not part time. Fully retired.

Hopefully this is in the appropriate forum. If not then please point me in the right direction.

Thanks.

If he was being paid a salary from a company whilst he was working (before retirement) then he will probably have paid National Insurance, check his wage slips or P60 forms from his employer.
If he was self employed, then he also should have paid National Insurance Contributions, check his self employment records.

    However...
If you know what his National Insurance Number is then you can use his NI number to check his NI payment records

    See : http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/ni/intro/basics.htm#8

    -wrong thread-
  • Thanks for that.

So it isn't just based on the tax year that the person dies in then is it?
What is it based on? Their lifetime, or a set amount of years before death?

I don't even know if my dad kept his P60s. I know he used to keep his payslips, but he may have thrown/burnt these when he retired 3 years ago.

That link is helpful though. I'll let my mum know & hopefully we can move on to the next question we get stuck at :) Thanks
  • My mum just called them. They said as he retired in 2008, he wont pay any NI after this.

The benefit/s appear to be based on his NI contributions.

Looking at the form the questions are:

    * during the 2 years before he died, did he pay NI contributions = no

Would this mean any chances of bereavement benefits are unlikely then? Even though he'll have had a lifes-worth of NI contributions behind him (he was always in work from the age of 15 until he retired).

Sorry, I do not know the answer to that question, but why not ask the authorities who will know .....

The notes on the BB1 form say :
You can find out more about bereavement benefits
    at https://www.direct.gov.uk/benefits
But if you are still not sure if you can get
    bereavement benefit, claim anyway.

    .....

If you want more information about bereavement
benefits, or any other benefit, or if you would like
    advice about employment and training
opportunities, please get in touch with your
    Jobcentre Plus offic
    e.
You can find the phone number and address on
the advert in the business numbers section of the
phone book. Look under Jobcentre Plus.

  • As BAA1 says, claim anyway. They can only say no, but were either your mother or father under state pension age when your father died ? If they were both over their state pension ages I can't see it being paid.

The questions/notes at the start of BB1 are some of the most baffling of all DWP forms. They make it seem like when anyone dies then a next of kin must be due a bereavement payment. This is not so, as I found out when my mother died and I completed BB1 for my father to send to JobCentre Plus.

My dad was 68 & retired

My mum is 49 & unemployed due to disability.

The payment seems to be geared towards my dads NI contributions, but whenever it asks about them, it's just asking whether he paid in the last 2 years - he didn't as he was retired. So it doesn't make positive reading as far as gaining this allowance goes.
