I think good tasting wine is very subjective and also to add to the complication a party where its not clear if its a big massive all out don't-care-what-the-booze-is party or if its closer to a small gathering where you want the wine to be savored.
I'd suggest visiting a professional wine merchants and asking them for advice. This is what I do if I want to get a gift for anyone and it normally goes down well. If your close, Borough Market (@London Bridge) comes highly recommended.0
