Hi,

My dad has heard that if you've paid NI for 44 years, you don't have to pay it anymore and you can claim back any NI paid after May last year.

Is this the case?

If so, would not paying NI anymore affect his pension in anyway?

If he is paying Class 1, 2 or 3 NI is not voluntary. It is a tax that cannot be reclaimed. If he is paying Class 3 he should stop.

Yes, it's just been discussed on Monebox and the specifics of the refund are mentioned here

Whilst you can't in general get refunds of NI paid in the course of employment (except for mistakes) you can arrange to pay less (on none) and still receive the same value of benefits - just as you can legitimately reduce your tax liability by rearranging your personal circumstances. The obvious one there is having two jobs (different employers) and benefitting from the 'nil band' on weekly NICs in each one.
