Credit Security Ltd - Total Nightmare! Advice Needed!

My OH owed around £1300 to Halifax for a CC. It defaulted etc. and was bounced around DCA's for ages, before he got the money to pay. He got a settlement figure of just over £1000, which he paid over the phone. This was July. Since then he's called numerous time asking for a letter to confirm that the debt is settled (or partial settlement)

He received a letter today from Halifax asking for the remaining balance of around £300. He rung Credit Security whom said the debt was settled and that they'd sent the letter 3 times and that it wasn't their problem, they weren't sending it again, and that we needed to speak to Royal Mail. OH argued this, they then said he needed to speak to Wescott as the they instructed CSL to collect the debt on their behalf. Called Wescott, They said no, speak to CSL.

All we want is a letter to say the matter is settled. Having checked his credit file last week, the entry for the Halifax account is still saying defaulted.

What are we supposed to do?!:mad::mad:

You could try a subject access request to CSL - which if they had sent a letter out would give you a copy of that letter but it does cost £10 and it sounds like there may never have been any such letter.

When you say he got a settlement figure of just over £1000 - was this just done by phone as well?

If you have nothing on paper then you could try writing to halifax to say that CSL gave you a settlement figure of £1xxx and that was paid on x date and see what they say.

Nothing on paper unfortunately, despite me telling him to do so!

He's juat said he spoke to Halifax, and they said that the £300 remaining would simply remain on the account?! If thats the case, it will never show as settled, will it????

No, it would stay on file until it drops off 6years after the default date.

So for the next 6 years, his credit file will show that he still owes £300, and that it's defaulted?

I'm sure when i made partial settlements, I go a letter confirming that the account was closed, and me credit file showed the same, i.e. partial settlement.

When was the original default date? presumably quite a while ago if its been around the DCAs for a whle? It will stay on for 6years from the original default date.

The key is to get the letter first before you pay the money, especially when its DCAs who can't be trusted. No help now I know.
