That is all.0 -
If you are both up for dancing and enjoy it, then by all means get some practice in beforehand. Perhaps if you talk nicely to the ceilidh band and their caller they might be able to teach you some of the basic moves beforehand?
If dancing isn't something you would normally do, but you are providing it for yourguests that enjoy it, then don't feel pressured to be on the dancefloor all night.
As for how good you will be; I can't say I've ever noticed whether the bride and groom at any wedding I'vebeen to were better at dancing than any of the guests. Just fall back on your normal dancing style that you'd do at anyone else's wedding.
If you want to do a choreographed dance for your first dance, or just learn a few moves beyond the normal 'shuffle', then go for it! There are loads of places that will give you a few lessons.
My H2B and I have just started learning salsa, so we'll probably do that for our first dance!

Just a little tip to anyone wanting to avoid the 'awkward shuffle' rather than dancing with your arms wrapped around each other just have one arm around the waist and hold the other hand- you automatically move more and can actually see each other. This is a move I've perfected due to being incredibly short and the usual slow dance hug thug being completely impractical. I think it makes for a much nicer dance plus we get silly and do little spins and stuff- much more fun!0

As I dj at a lot of weddings , I would have to say the majority of 1st dances are "awkward shuffles". Usually at the insistance of the groom.
I do encourage more but have not have anyone take up my offer of setting them up with a choreographer. I have a couple of those "1st dance" routines from Youtube on my website to let people see what is possible. More like impossible to most tho`.
I always ask the couple for songs that they like to dancing too as it always looks good to get the bride and groom up dancing.
Regarding those who don`t dance. I receive more :T from people who have not danced but appreciated the music that was played during the evening than from those who danced all night. Strange...
Obviously , as a dj , I like to see the dancefloor filled but I also appreciate it is not for everybody. And it doesn`t stop them enjoying themselves.0 -
I don't do dancing. At parties, I sit down and wish had the confidence to get up and boogie like my mates do.
I'm determined to dance at my wedding.
I'll mostly be mingling and chatting, but later on will be up there dancing and hope lots of people will be too!
I have a dance booked with my grandson and there are a few other children there, so that should be fun. Me and my flower girl and bopping away!0 -
At my Zumba class, we do the Zorba the greek dance at the end of the class.
That's fun and gets everyone laughing, trying to keep up. I might see if we can do that.0 -
When my sister got married she and her now-husband didn't have a traditional first dance as he hates dancing - instead they got everyone up and dancing with them, which was good as it got everyone involved and spared their blushes! They also had quite a fast song (Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison) which I think helped.
I'm planning to do something similar if I get married - mine and OH's 'song' is quite a fast one so will be good for dancing properly as described by trinity (ie one arm round the waist and holding the other hand, plus silly little spins, back and forth hand movements etc) and I hate being the centre of attention so would much prefer for everybody to be dancing and having a good time instead of staring at us whilst we shuffle about awkwardly!"A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge." - Tyrion LannisterMarried my best friend 1st November 2014Loose = the opposite of tight (eg "These trousers feel a little loose")Lose = the opposite of find/gain (eg "I'm going to lose weight this year")0 -

We did salsa as our first dance
Kept it as a surprise. We went to general salsa lessons about 18 months before the wedding, stopped three months later, but still choreographed our first dance ourselves. Only thing to watch is the height of your heels...... Doing salsa in 4-inch heels is not easiest! Don't worry about typing out my username - Call me COMP(Unless you know my real name - in which case, feel free to use that just to confuse people!)0 -
Thank you for the helpful replies everyone

I kept reading everywhere about how amazed by Loestar was such a great song for a first dance. Well I looked the song up on YouTube for the first time oast night, and have absoloutely fallen in love with it
(I had heard the song sung before, but didn't know what the name of it was). Hopefully we iwll be able to incorporate a few spins, turns etc into the dance. We will dance by ourselves for the first half of the song, then get our mums and dads, best man, grooomsman, bridesmaids etc up to join us
OH is looking into getting us some dancing lessons. I think it will be a good idea not only for our own wedding, but we also have a lot of other weddings to attend in the next 18 months or so, so it would be nice to know some of the dances for those
Getting married to a wonderful lady on August 10, 2012.
Need to save up, lose weight, reduce my money worries and get back to being the real me! :j0
