Grrrrr to mr student loan man...

Being responsible i approached SL about my situation when i go on maternity in april. MKy wage goes from 1400 a month to about 430...

but the lovely lady on the phone informs me 'tough!!! thats the rules based on last year... you will have to pay... or default adn then we'll deal with it' How annoying are they.... I'm trying to be responsible or offer something... and more annoyingly i've always over paid when i could in the past... And there is no room for discussion... I was polite asked to speak to a manager or the corrections or default team no luck

Sorry to rant but so

They won't be getting away with this... sitting here wondering if i inform them with good notice adn proff of my position if the same applies with unreasonable bank charges??? £50 for DD bouncing when i've told you it woul hmmmmmmmmmmm (sorry just thinking to myself)

Ask for a deferment form. Then when you get your first pay slip on reduced salary send in the form with copy of the pay slip.

To defer you need payslips/proof of income for the past three months. Get a form and do it if you can.

On the other hand, if you get a supporting letter from someone else saying they are supporting you, that's acceptable. (in theory you can get into trouble for lying on the form but I've never heard of any actually being checked (I worked for them last year)).

Julybride - as far as I'm aware you can defer your payments as long as you are earning under the national average but you'll need to prove this.

Rallymad - do you have a contact number for the student loans company? I really need to sort mine out. They go back to 1995 and I'm now in a position to deal with them.

    Regards and thanks

  • If you don't have the last 3 payslips for deferment then you can get your payroll dept. to write a letter saying what your wages are at the mo and use that for deferment. I had to do this when I started a new job and didn't have the pay slips.

I suggetsed that i get proof of my maternity pay being statutory from my current employer and its start date and enclose a letter from my husband with proof of his income (which is well under the threshold) and that he will be supporting me and therefore we can't make ayemetns at the moment until we can prove my pay for 3 months!!

She said.... no tht won't work and i've told you there is nothing you can do:mad: she actually said - what if you don't need to take your maternity!!!!!! we don't know you've had a baby!!! you still might not!!!!

I'm going to do it anyway because i think that it should be acceptable reading hte paper work.... but still

Thanks for all your input, i'll let you know how i get on.

Anser to this very much depends if you went to Uni prior to thr 1998 intake or after. This is when the conditions for student loans changed from mortgage style to income based - if its the latter then there is no need to worry, you'll be earning sub 15K so no payments will be taken.

Not too sure on the older type loans

I'm with Oscar on this one. If it's a new style student loan and your income falls you don't have to pay but not sure about the old ones. It does sound unfair. What about phoning CAB?
