hi there.im going Br.in 1 or 2 months coming, but some times ago received a gas bill statment for £310.it says this is a catch up bill from August 2009.day after receied new letter saying if you don't pay it immediatly we will disconnect the supply of gas,,we r worry and scared ,if we pay it all off ,wouldn't be a favor to a creditor,i don't know if gas bill is priority or non priority debt, and like to add that ,they say we can change the meter to a prepayment meter and apply the debt with a weekly recovery rate. we r confused ,or shall i add this bill to my other debt, can they disconnect our gas suppliment.please tell us the best way to deal with this matter,
many thanks in advance

Hi,
The process of disconnection is often a lengthy one, usually requiring a magistrates court warrant. You (in my opinion) would not be considered as making a prefference as there is the 'action' - making the payment and the 'intent' -are you doing this to improve the gas companies position if you became BR?
No, you would be making a payment to keep an essential supply.
'Actual disconnection' is extremely rare, the normal course is to install a pre pay meter. Don't let it go to the wire, make an arrangement to pay ongoing gas plus an amount you can afford off the arrears, when you go BR, the remaining debt up to the date of your BR will be included as part of your BR.
