Unpaid work

Hi looking for some info/advice.

When i was unemployed i got a job with a bookshop. I worked for a day but was offered another job so left. I didnt sign a contract as the bookshop was waiting for it to be sent up the next day. I have been told by the bookshop that they wont pay me for the day i worked. Is this correct?

Technically I think not. You could probably get advice from ACAS. Although one can understand the bookshop being a bit miffed: you accept a job, do a day's work, then don't come back because you've got a better job ...
