Lost my money

I drew a chq from the passbook of a Halifax savings account to pay my Barclaycard bill- the number was printed on chq- and then stupidly put it in the wrong return envelope, instead of posting it to Barclaycard I posted it to the Halifax one card. I have rang everybody, everybody has a different answer from the chq will be destroyed, to they have to return it to you. If it is destroyed, and Halifax have no record of recieving it, what can I do about it? Halifax customer service say they will put an e-mail to the clearing house...Thanks- Joanne.

  • Give them a chance.

Can the Halifax not put a stop on the original cheque and re-issue? (Even if it means you paying a small fee)

Particularly if it was for the same value as on the payslip .... they will likely process it.

Bulk processors of cheques, such as Barclaycard, don't check the payee on cheques. They use high speed opening / processing machinery ... so the cheque will likely go through with virtually no manual intervention.

If you want to guarantee it won't be processed - you need to 'Stop' it with your Bank. Which they will probably charge for .. as it's not lost. Or they may be sympathetic .. as it's one of their cheques

Bit unclear if you sent it with the Barclaycard payslip? Which is your best bet they will spot it during processing and reject it out? They won't destroy it - but they may send it on to Barclaycard directly .... as you're not unique!
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !
  • They can out a stop on the branch draft and re-issue
  • Thanks the those who replied- I went into branch again today- they have now decided they can stop it after all- they should have told me that last week- and say I will be re credited tomorrow.
