confused over bank accounts - new to this!

Hi, I have consulted people and it has been decided I need to go bankrupt.

I have been looking at the bank accounts and see only choice is Barclays or Co-op.

I currently bank with Barclays and have a loan, barclaycard and overdraft from them which is to be dealt with, but I also have the Co-op as a creditor!!

What are my options as I'm stressing as to whether I will be able to have a bank account.

Thanks

How much do you owe the Co-op?

One option - prior to your bankruptcy - would be to concentrate on paying them off, even if it means making lower or no payments to your other creditors.

Shunting thousands in one direction may attract attention when you are examined after your bankruptcy, but a few hundred probably won't.

I opened an account with Barclays post BR, as they were one of my creditors, and I did not want them to offset any money I possibly had in an account with them. The Coop will not let you open an account with them if you include them in your BR.

  • Never Again - I owe just short of £6k with co-op and have been making just around the minimum payments for years which hasn't dented the balance.

RBS do an an account which is a basic account and they accept bankrupts. we have banked with them ever since our BR 2001. as far as i am aware most banks now have to provide a basic account to people but i could be wrong!

Sorry louiser but you are wrong. RBS are no longer BR friendly. The ONLY two banks that offer BR an account are the Co-op and unfortunately the OP will not be able to get an account with them as they won't give you one if you owe them money or Barclays and the OP will be able to go into a branch AFTER she has been declared BR and open a Cash Card account. As the OP owes Barclays money she won't be able to do this before she declares herself BR.

  • So when I go BR my wages and other credits will go into my existing bank account and I will lose them?? :(
