That's a point, will try that as well. Was running on a test machine in a sandbox so I could easily wipe and start again. Faster than the snapshots.

It does have multiple options for disabling Java, but none of them IE specific (does have a greyed out box for being the IE default).

In the 'Java' tab, one can disable it per user or for the whole system.

In the 'Advanced' tab, it can also be disabled via the Java Plug-in > 'Enable the next generation Jave Plug-in (requires browser restart)' option.

Using any of those options prevented the Java test from running, as well as any Java exploits I encountered from multiple exploits kits.
  • @RussJK, came across your post and joined the site to answer as you're almost there. As you found, you can't disable it within IE itself (same for IE8 and on XP/Vista/7)

But you CAN disable it specifically for IE in Java Control Panel - although it has "a greyed out box for being the IE default" in W7/Vista (which you can't untick by clicking in the box), if you highlight the entry (MS IE) and press Spacebar, that does clear the box. In XP it isn't greyed out so you can just click to untick.

Apply that and it changes the registry entry (you had already spotted) to 0 but strangely you get a message saying you have to restart IE for it to take effect - you don't, it works immediately. Still, a long winded way compared to equivalent in Firefox/Chrome and not happy that IE's Manage Add-ons doesn't work :(
