Preserved Ginger

I am after some preserved ginger (NOT ginger preserve, not crystalised ginger), I saw Nigel Slater use some on the TV. Found it on Goodness Direct, but would rather not have to buy it mail order. OK, I know I could make it, but I would rather get some that has been done properly!!!!! Does anyone know of a shop that sells it? Pretty please!

Not sure I have ever heard of preserved ginger. Is it the one in a jar with syrup - stem ginger?

My curiousity got the better of me and I googled for the site you mentioned. Is it the uncrystallised ginger (also described as glace ginger) you mean? If so, no need to reply as I have never seen it anywhere before.

I watched the programme and he used stem ginger. I buy it from Sainsburys but you should be able to find it in any of the big supermarkets. It will say stem ginger in sugar syrup on the jar, and should be in the baking section. A jar costs about £1 though I haven't bought any for a while so it could have gone up.

You can get it in Julian Graves also but likely to cost a lot more.

Thanks. I had a feeling it might have been stem ginger OP meant.

As well as adding it to rice pudding, try using it in Delia's preserved ginger cake, or add bits chopped up to rhubarb in a crumble. A small amount can also be chopped up and added to chopped melon for a nice starter. And when all the balls of ginger have gone, the sauce can be used to make a quick pudding. Pour over any left over cake and heat in the microwave, or just pour cold over ice cream.
