I also wouldn't read too much into the 'know socially' side of things. These people don't have to be your best friends. You just have to know them in some circumstance other than being their client/patient/etc, in a non-business interaction. So a neighbour, a distant relative, a friend of a friend you've met a couple of times. There must be someone, surely. Go to church a couple of times then ask the vicar.
Even if not, most people are happy to sign these things as a favour (or for a fee in some cases, I know an accountant who'll sign anything like this for £20). I'm not saying it's right, exactly, but it's not like they are really guaranteeing anything. They are just verifying that they have met you and know you as 'your name'. They aren't saying you definitely are 'your name'. If you turn out to be a bad'un they are not going to get any come-back.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j
