Debt Problem - debt from 20 years ago - Fraudulent Breach of Trust

Can anybody give me advise I got a letter yesterday from an accountant who did some work for me 20 years since Out of the blue I got a letter to say I still owed him £500 pounds for this work The work came to £800 but I paid £300 he says so it left £500 which I seem to remember I paid in credit card instalments but I can't find any rceipts This letter said if I did'nt pay in 7 days he would take me to court. So today I got a claim from the court about this debt which now totals nearly £2000 with interest I wonder how I stand about this This was first letter I have got fom him in 20 years

I may be wrong, but surely if the debt hasn't been acknowledged in last 6 years would it be statue barred.

may be worth ringing a local solicitor and ask for a free half hour session and see what they have to say.

Has he put the dates on the particulars of claim?

If not, you need to give the date the alleged debt was incurred, state that you have not acknowledged it by payment or in writing since then, and assert that it is statute barred under the Limitation Act 1980.

He'd be daft to waste any more money on it.

Thanks for your replies He has put a date on claim form 25-6-91 to 6-10-11 although he has done no work since 91 I found the letter stating his work was finished also I went to see him on Friday and asked him why he had waited so long to chase the alleged debt he said he had a motor cycle accident and it left him with mental health issues so on the claim form it is ticked about the claim here it says Does your claim include any issues under the Human Rights Act 1998 I wonder if that makes any difference to the 6 year rule

I would find out if there was a human rights act prior to 1998... How can he prove that you have not paid him, It would be your word against his...Who keep receipts for twenty years, or even statements...also why it taken him so long to come forward... You could go to CAB they have legal knowledge.. good luck on this one..

A "breach of trust" could be a huge great bundle of things. This gives a list of theft-related examples (scroll down to the sentencing guidelines); there are other kinds.

Is the accountant claiming that you're in breach of trust? If so, what does he say you've done?

He says I owe him just over £1000 and he has added interest for 20 years to make £1900
