Basic pension question - is mine any good?

Hi all,
About to turn permanent at the company I work for, and I read briefly about the pension scheme but I don't know how it compares with anyone else's, or whether pensions are in general a worthwhile investment currently.
3% of pension from company, plus
contribute up to 6% and company will match
can contribute a further 3% which company won't match, if keen!
So 3% for nothing, 15% if contribute 6% (and tax relief on that 6% contribution). My salary will be in the region of £36k, so that's maybe £1000/year for no cost, or anything up to £6480/year if I contribute £180/month (before tax).
This "feels" good but I don't know? My fiancee and I will be moving into rented accommodation within the next few months, and I am trying to work out likely budgets for the sake of where we can afford to look, etc etc.
A full-on pension max contribution would obviously be a significant difference ... I'm 32 and have no current pension or major savings (a few k which will be eaten by moving house and the wedding later this year, I am sure).
