  • You can only get IB if you have paid enough National Insurance Contributions, but you may be eligible for IS for Disability.

I would contact the Income Support people.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton
  • As IB is based on National Insurance contributions you need to have paid enough. As a rough guide if you have worked for pretty much the last 2 -3 years then you could get IB.

The issue is that IB is only for people who are too ill to work, I assume that even if you were not on anti-depressants you would not work as you would have to look after the children. I don't wish to make assumptions but if this is correct then you would not be entitled to IB.

If your depression is affecting your health once you have had the symptoms for 3 months then it may be worth applying for Disability Living Allowance. The forms are wuite complex especially for mental health so it may be better to seek an adviser at your local CAB.

IF DLA was granted then you may get a disability premium which would raise the amount of IS.

Rightly or wrongly there are many women with children who claim IB or more likely IS and IB (IS + disability premium and IB credits).
