I always use the plum tomatoes now, in bolognese or anything and just chop them up myself. If youre worried about salt it might be better to use plum toms. 3 tins AND passata is a lot of tomato!“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

Not sure about .5gm being 1/3rd of recommended max ....
I believe RDA of SODIUM is 2 - 2.5 gms which equates to 5 to 6 gms of Sodium Chloride.
However as an aside to the "salt is bad for you" argument.
My relatively frail elderly mother (86 years old) is currently in hospital and besides other problems, they are concerned that her daily fluid intake is too low.
Accordingly she is on a saline drip (not intravenous) during the night.
I was looking at one of the saline bags today.
Each 1 litre bag, and she can have at least 2 or 3 in 24 hours, contains 9g (NINE GRAMS) of SALT.
So thats a daily intake of 18 to 27 grams of salt not including any that is in her food.
So much for salt being bad for you !There are 10 types of people in the world. ‹(•¿•)›(11)A104.28S94.98O112.46N86.73D101.02(12)J130.63F126.76M134.38A200.98M156.30J95.56J102.85A175.93

All very confusing, this
Don't know where I got 1.5 gms from, maybe I misheard. However, just had a quick look online and came up with figures that say we should be limiting our salt intake to 2,400 mg (2.4 gms) of SALT per day, not just sodium. Apparently we on average eat 5 gms per day, but we can quite healthily live on 0.5 gms per day!
Found this too - may find THIS useful especially if you have kids.
Anyway, just had another thought. Low blood pressure runs in both mine and Mr TM's families, so maybe we're as well off gaining the benefits of lycopene etc from eating the tomatoes. We need to get on the food manufacturers' backs though.;)
(Oooh - excited - got first link to work :j )

PMSL & ROTLMAO. I siad to Mrs MATH last night that all the Ol'Stylers would l be having a fit of the vapours cos we put chopped toms in everything:beer: I checked my tins and they said trace also. I agree with a lot of what McKeith says but I don't like her stance of BAD foods and having BANNED foods or BANISHED foods as she kept saying last night. I don't think she promotes a healthy attitude to eating and diet cos she has swung too far the other way.Life's a beach! Take your shoes off and feel the sand between your toes.0

Well MATH, we couldn't disappoint now, could we?
I agree, she is extreme, but then these people she goes to are extreme in the other direction, albeit a not uncomon situation nowadays. I'm glad they no longer refer to her as a 'Dr.' now. TBH, I think that healthy as she may be, she always looks like she's been put through a mangle. There's a woman who NEEDS a bit of fat on her.;)
ps Have you had withdrwal symptoms from lack of slow-cooker?0 -

Couldn't agreee more - you can be too thin sometimes and it's very ageing if you look gaunt.
Not missing the slo-cooker too much at the mo, as we move into spring I would be using it less and less anyway. Not sure how I'm going to cook my gammons and hams yet thoWill get another one before the year is out if only so I don't feel left out on the Ol'Style boards:j
