New 2for1 Oyster Card deals including Blockbuster rentals

Options
What’s the deal?

This year’s new Oyster Card 2for1 offers are now out, including Blockbuster rentals (nationwide), Ice-skating at the Natural History Museum, restaurants and theatres.

How to grab one

See a full list of available offers and when you can use them. For some you simply present your Oyster Card, for others you need to call up the relevant company. They are valid until 31st March.

The Blockbuster Deal

Show your Oyster Card Monday to Thursday at any Blockbuster store and get two-for-one DVD rentals. This is nationwide, not just London.

Don’t have an Oyster Card?

If you’re outside London so can’t pick up a card, sign up for one here. The deposit for the card is £3 and you need to put £10 credit on it. They post it to your house for free.

Of course if you ever visit the capital the credit will be useful anyway, considering the eye-watering prices for those without cards. As an example. a return from Tottenham Court Road to Leicester Square costs £8 when you buy a paper ticket (for one stop!), but only £3 with an Oyster.

its 2-for-1 on game rentals too. Or a mixture of DVD/game.
Save saynoto0870.com in your favorites, and stop giving companies more £££ dialling 0870 numbers when you can dial freephones or cheaper alternatives
call your credit card company, tell them that you want to leave, 99% of the time theyll lower your APR%
Remember when that Bank Manager or Salesperson smiles at you, all he sees is £ notes. Dont forget the motto, "the wider their grin, the more debt your in"
  • You can get the money back anytime. Sorry inside knowledge, make sure you always use the same means of payment(long story)
  • I like the sound of this card, as I have recently successfully used a similar "BONOS" card on the buses in Tenerife. As I will be an infrequent visitor to London the ability to loan it to other members of my family will be usfull, however can it be used to pay for the travel of several people on the same journey?

Not according to the TFL website:
Can more that one person travel together using the same Oyster card to pay as you go?
No, only one person can use the Oyster card at any one time.

Also, there are certain restrictions of when an Oystercard is transferable:
Can anyone else use my Oyster card?

If you have an adult Oyster card which you only use to pay as you go, you can let another adult use your card when you are not using it, even if the card is registered in your name. However, any Oyster card containing a valid season ticket cannot be lent to another person for their use.

If you have an Oyster card with a discount settlement - Student Oyster photocard, Child Oyster photocard, or a 16-17 or New Deal discount on your Oyster card - you may not lend it to anyone else to use.

    Cheers

    Mike

Does anyone know if this can be combined with Nectar? i.e. use the Oyster 2 for 1 offer then use 500 Nectar points as your payment method? Their T&Cs are as below and don't seem to exclude it, but wondered if anyone had personal experience?

PS Agree that given the difference in prices compared to paper tickets it's well worth having an Oyster card even if you just visit London a few times a year!
  • Bump...anyone tried using Nectar points as a form of payment for this offer?

    A.

surely one day travelcards are better for tourists on short visits, still?

If you only use the oyster on buses, tubes and trains the oyster will automatically cap it off when it reaches the cost of a one day travel card, unfortunatley it doesnt do that for trains though so if you were using a train to then it would be cheaper to use a paper ticket.

If you also use your oyster on just buses for the day it will cap to the price of a one day bus pass.

No, still for tourists the oyster is better. It only costs a 3 pounds deposit that you get back when you return them when you leave. It gives you great discounts also, like 2 for 1 on theatres and rides and tickets to exhibitions and stuff.

I've just returned from a trip to London and we bought some tourist Oyster cards and they were great - so easy to use and top up and cheaper than the price of a travelcard.

Didn't take advantage of the offers as we'd found things elsewhere - but would certainly look at them next time I plan to visit.
