Are Abbey Taking the Mickey Out of Me ???

Hello there,
I've been with Abbey for the past 2 years & 9 months.
And for the last 9 months I have been paying the SVR which is now at 7.09%
Yes, I now know that after reading Martins Advise, I've been really daft !
So, I've rang Abbey up today to ask about remortgage to a better deal.
I was told that it would cost £75 to move the mortgage and the only rates I was offered were 6.45% fixed 2 years or 6.25% fixed 5 years.
I'm going to use a mortgage broker cause I'm sure there must be a better rate out there for me.
But can I just ask you peeps in the know, do thoses two offers sound right in your experience of trying to get better deals with your own lender, or with Abbey or is this just because I'm new there trying to pull a fast one ????
I'm not asking for advise, but just in your opinon are Abbey taking the Mickey Out of Me ???

You haven't posted any figures(property vale or mortgage amount needed), but those rates look pretty high to me.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a Mortgage Adviser, so you need to take my word for it. There are certainly cheaper rates available elsewhere in the marketplace. Check out either CharcolOnline, London & Country Mortgages or MoneySupermarket.com.
(Also read my note below regarding the spelling of advice - the Spelling Police have warned you!)Mortgage Feb 2001 - £129,000
Mortgage July 2007 - £0
Original Mortgage Termination Date - Nov 2018
Mortgage Interest saved - £63790.60
ISA Profit since Jan 1st 2015 - 98.2% (updated 1 Dec 2020)0 -
We have a fixed rate with Abbey due to finish next year (arranged by a financial adviser) Last year we went to see a mortgage adviser at Abbey who advised us to go elsewhere as Abbey had no good deals for existing customers, only for new customers0

The rate does look high. Are you self certing by any chance?
I would go looking elsewhere.0 -

we had a similar experience - Abbey don't offer good rates to existing customers (certainly nothing like on their website!). We went elsewhere...0

I had this with Abbey, basically I then searched the web for the cheapest fixed rate, asked to be put through to the 'Customer Retention' department and said that I was going to move unless they matched the deal, they came to within 0.1 % of the lowest rate I could find.
Give it a try and you might be surprised, it certainly saves the hassle of getting revalued etc ...0 -
i had exactly the same with Abbey, i rang them to see if they could offer me a better rate and the lady might as well have told me to get lost, hence i am in the process of going with someone else.0

we had a similar experience with the halifax.
house#3 they wouldnt drop the rate by much more than you state.
sold house#3, 1 year later used halifax again for house#6, twice the mortgage, on one wage, and got a cheaper rate than started off with on house#3 because we were 'new' customers! :rolleyes:0 -
Since the take over of Abbey, they don't seem to be as user friendly as they once were.FREEDOM IS NOT FREE0
