I had a mortgage with the RBS about 12 years ago and was told I could not get the mortgage unless I paid extra for life insurance or something similar I still have all the paper work or have I left it too late to claim anything back? Can’t remember how much I was paying
But I think it was in the hundreds per month.

You were paying hundreds per month for life insurance? If you still have the paperwork you should be able to see exactly what it was; hundreds for life assurance alone sounds very unlikely (unless the loan was huge or there was some medical/age reason for life insurance for you to be horrendously expensive).
Tell us what it was and we'll be able to give you a better idea, but on what you've said I'd guess you probably can't claim anything back.
If the mortgage finished 12 years ago you're likely out of time for making a claim - and in any case it's unusual for life assurance to be mis-sold. If the lender wants to make life assurance a condition of the loan, they can do so perfectly legally. If you had a partner or dependents, then you probably needed the life cover whether it was a requirement or not.0
