Liquid Diet

Options
Hello Everyone!

I am currently on a liquid diet due to a broken jaw which is wired shut. I am very limited to things I can have as things need to be able to pass through a straw and the small gaps between my teeth. I was discharged from hospital with some vile milkshakes (which do contain lots of good things and calories but I cant face drinking them)
I am completely stuck on things I can have, Im living off of chocolate milkshakes and sieved soup :(
Plus its getting me very down :(
Ive got about 10 days (all things going well) of being wired shut, So has anybody got any suggestions of things I can have that Ive maybe overlooked?
Many Thanks :)

Crikey, that's tough for you. Do hope the healing is quick.

    Do you have a blender?

Blend fruit (banana, peaches, strawberries, cooked apple etc) with evaporated milk - that should go through a straw & be yummy & calorific (must keep the calories up!)

Blend lightly scrambled egg & add milk or some liquid.

Custards, blended porridge - all liquified to go through straw.

Do try & get at least one of those 'drinks' down each day as they have lots of vitamins in.

fruit & veg are important for fibre. You must keep the digestion moving.

I've had problems with mouth trauma & teeth loss so have been through something like this.

You may, for a while, just have to forget 'enjoying' food, just see it as body fuel & something that will aid your healing. Just get it down.

    Very best of luck.

    Try some green smoothies?

Blend together: 1 banana, 1 mango, 2 cups spinach, 2 cups water

    Try googling for other recipes.

I promise you can't taste the spinach! :)

    Poor you!

........and sod's law says you're a slim little thing, who won't even be able to appreciate the very tiny payback of shifting a few surplus pounds of weight whilst you're suffering!

Joyfull's suggestions are great, also try to keep occupied as best you can and distract yourself. Hope you're better soon.

    Thank you for the suggestions!
Ive lost over a stone in weight since the accident happened 4 weeks ago, thankfully I havent been wired shut that entire time!

I attempted homemade soups but once blended down to a liquid and not able to have a nice bit of bread to dip, they lose most of the appeal!

Im trying to keep busy but with not eating alot my energy is fairly low :(
  • V8 is good with a splash of worchester sauce (vodka optional !)

Fresh fruit smoothies, bananas keep the hunger at bay.

Homemade soups, always add spuds so they fill you up.

Add some ice cream to fruit/chocolate smoothies for some extra calories, use whole milk in them.

    Poor you.

    I'd try different soups.

e.g. you wouldn't think of having bread with Hot and Sour soup, or crab meat and sweet corn. A nice coconutty thai style soup might be worth trying. But these aren't particularly calorific.

I'd also think of things like Jewish style chicken soup...broth and consomme....although not going to build you up they'll be meaty and warming and less ''mushy'' in the mouth.

If you doun't need to lose weight and are wasting away it might be worth indulging in a real milkshake every few days. DH's favourite is greater than the sum of its parts...very delicious: vanilla icecream, a banana and a little peanut butter, blended with a little milk to get it ''suckable'' not solid.
