its not illegal to share files that are not copyrighted...... all the songs me and my friends make we distribute free, you will find the a lot of artists do this and peer to peer networks (like soulseek) are a good way of people finding new artists.
the fact that it is peer to peer means you wont get busted by the RIA unless your ISP sells you out0 -

Hi,
Downloading music is an area that warrants some serious investigation. Type in "download mp3 music" to Google. I've had a look at some of the sites listed on the first page that comes up, and a lot of them have the same look and feel about them... you can't help but get the feeling that (a) they're primarily trying to get your email address before you see the price (presumably so they can spam you about other things); (b) they might not even be legitimate. Worryingly, to me anyway, there was even a legitimate looking web site that pointed to the "top 3" as their favourites after claiming that they had looked at over 80 sites, and concluded that most of them were amateur, had bad links, and non-reactive contact forms. Butthe recommended top sites had that dodgy look and feel to them. Same family??
If it helps, I just finished a 14 day trial with emusic.com (recommended when I downloaded the latest version of one of the webs favourite free music player Winamp) . At emusic.com I was able to download 40 tracks in my trial period + various others that were promotional material given freely. I was able to be selective about the tracks I downloaded... in fact I chose many that were long tracks, so in all I got 974MB of MP3 files from them! Fully signed up paying members can introduce other members to emusic.com and get themselves 50 free downloads. To address the other question, all the MP3 tracks I downloaded were able to be copied onto my MP3 player and onto another pc.0
