Leap Pad Explorer or vtech innotab

My almost 5 year old daughter would love one of these for christmas but what one is best?

  • I think a lot depends on your experience of VTech and Leapfrog toys in the past. We've had the Leapster 2, TAG reading systems and the Leapster Explorer, and now I've got my eye on the LeapPad Explorer. But I just noticed on a parent's review that the InnoTab can play films which sounds great. If you do buy one or the other it'd be great to hear how you get on.

I have gone for the leappad but was in the same dilema. It will be for my 5 year old and the leappad looks better for her age. There is a fab review on utube for it where the user takes it out of the box and runs through all the games/learning apps it comes with and shows her son using it. It has a camara, microphone and can take video, yes the apps cost more, they start from £5 rather then £3 but I think there is plenty to get on with before we need to download more and I expect the price will come down eventually and there will be free ones like what happend with the iphone/tab. No it cant play films like the innotab but they watch films on t.v and I really dont want to get them in to watching films on long journeys (which our rare in our household anyway).

I havnt found any good in depth reviews for the innotab and the info on the website about it isnt as extensive. They both eat batteries innotab takes 2 and leappad takes 4 so best to buy rechargables for both. I even contemplated getting one of each as i have two children but thinking about it my daughter would gravitate towards the more child looking one, (and my son is 3 so would probably prefer it too) it just looks more appealing to their age group.

The leappad is in short supply where as you can still get hold of the innotab at the moment, so whatever you choose, dont wait for to long if its for Christmas.

I went for the Innotab. The leappad looks good and I prefer the screen size, on reading reviews from people though it seems the leappad has been well marketed but doesn't live up to the hype. I bought two for my daughters age 3 and 5.
