I recently got emails (which I can't now find) from the bt direct store & hp themselves with very good offers which included trade-in & cash-back

That is a rubbish laptop, WillUK1. Not only is it a factory second but it uses the Vista operating system and it's only got a 160 Gb hard drive.

Comet have got an Asus for £300. It's got 3Gb RAM, a 320Gb hard drive capacity, an HDMI port and a built-in webcam.
