I shop at Tesco because it would be silly not to, given there's a huge one five minutes walk from my doorstep and I'd have to get the car out and drive past it to get anywhere else. As plus points it has four big whoopsie sections and is pretty certain to have most of the offers in, plus a fair policy on coupons (it takes them, but not to excess) and the staff are pleasant and helpful. I certainly don't do all my shopping there (got some good independant shops plus Lidl, Aldi and Iceland in town and Sainsburys ten minutes drive away) but it's well worth two trips a week at whoopsie time. I don't like our local Asda/Walmart (sticky floors and weird smell) and the nearest Morrisons is too awkward a trip to do regularly.

So I do shop in Tesco. But my average bill there has really gone down thanks to the amount of offers it has compared to the old small branch. I don't think we eat any more or differently but there's lots of savings for a canny shopper. However it's not the canny shoppers tesco is making the profits on, is it? I think in general the buying public is wising up a bit more about food shopping and changing their buying habits, because they have to in these troubled times. The gravy train is drying up a bit for Tesco, as were. People just don't have money to throw away any more.
    Val.

valk-scot you have hit the nail right on the head there .Folk are not stupid and when things start getting too dear they will shop around.Tesco bemoaning that their electrical stuff has slowed down in sales is hardly suprising when there is competion, not only from other outlets, but from the internet.

Years ago it was said that the CWS (Coop) could cater for you from the cradle to the grave and they gave out a 'divi' in rather the same way as Sainsburys give Nectar points, and Tesco give clubcard points But the Coop have struggled over the past few years to keep afloat at all.

Maybe its the enormous stores that Tesco seem to get planning permission for almost anywhere (apart from Sherringham,Norfolk:T:j) a lovely little town that turned down all the incentives/bribes that Tesco's threw at them so the independant shops and High Street could survive.Well done to them.

I used to use the little Tesco's across the road from me, then it was revamped into a 'Metro' store (where I live is a long way from anything remotely resembling a metropolis) and immediately the prices rose and the stock became the more expensive brands with few, if any, value products. So I stopped going there I am lucky that I can drive to where I want to shop but there are a lot of elderly folk who cannot and although our local bus is fairly good and regular if you are elderly and maybe not so able to get on and off a bus that restricts you to using the local shop.Tesco's are quite aware of this and I find their attitude rather sad that they are doing their best to grab every penny they can from a 'captive local customer'. I quite often offer a lift to my neighbours so they can go to the local shopping centre which I know helps them out. If I'm going anyway its not costing me any exta in diesel.

Its their attitude that shopper are not aware of their cunning tricks and ploys that get my goat
Well I'd better get off this big high horse before I bust a blood vessal You can tell I am not Tesco's best fan.

My youngest DD has to shop there as she has not the time as I have to shop around, and has a family of 7 to cater for .Her food bill is rather large, and yet she does a lot of home cooked meals as her boys just don't eat junk food at all, and a ready meal would not fill one of her strapping sons :):)

There is always at least three veggies on the table in the evening at dinner as the kids all have packed lunches and a proper cooked meal every night .I help out with the prep. at times as both her and her OH work full time. The majority of her monthly wage goes on her food bill, and she shops twice a week after work. There are times towards the end of the month when things get a bit lean, and have to be streeetched a bit but so far they get through .If the food prices keep going up as they do God knows how an awful lot of folk are going to cope .There is only so much belt tightening that you can do.

Maybe they're realising that the customers aren't as thick as they'd like to think we are. When prices double just so that they can be bogof of course we don't like it. The wipes I get for example are usually about £1.39, then they rise suddenly to £2.39 so that next week they are bogof, so you're actually only saving 20p per pack. Bottles of coke etc go up to over £2 when they have buy 1 get 2 free. They had buy 1 get 2 free on the toothpaste we use a while back. Normal price £1, buy 1 get 2 free price £1.96, so really it's buy2 get 1 free.

I shop at Tesco as it is 10 minutes walk from the house and a 2-3 minute drive. All the other supermarkets involve two bus journeys or a drive through the city centre and out again. Going to a butchers means going into the city centre and the greengrocers is a 15 minute walk away and costs more than Tesco. When I have to drag all the bags back home and spend £3.50 to get the alternatives then I'm going to use Tesco.
All shops are out to make a profit. That's why they are open. I don't agree with some of Tesco's business practices, but all the others are guilty as well. Don't tar and feather Tesco unless the other big supermarkets are going to get the same treatment.

That's how they got permission - providing competition and most locals will probably be thankful as Coop local stores aren't known for their bargains.

    Tesco put up prices.

...so less people shop at Tesco.

    ...so Tesco make less profit.

    ...so Tesco put up prices.

They try various deceptions to make us think they're reducing prices but sooner or later they may realise that we're not as stupid as they think we are.

Then they charge you extra on home delieries i did a shop yesterday that should have come to £90.20 and tesco had charged me £93.20 hoping i wouldnt notice after ringing up i got £4.50 knocked off my bill! result

The only problem with this quote, and the original comment is that profits in the UK actually went up by 4.5%, it was LFL sales, excluding petrol and VAT, that dropped by 0.5%

As for the American arm it did make a loss but that was planned for as part of the role out, it is planned to break even this year and then turn a profit.

Tesco have been in decline for a couple of years now. Almost all of a sudden they became more expensive than ASDA & Morrisons and even Sainsburys seem to offer better value now.

I'm fortunate in that I can shop at any supermarket I like almost on a daily basis so I only use Tesco for offers.

I never buy petrol there now either and I buy a lot. I'm even going to change from Tesco mobile.

I know loads of people who now shop elsewhere like me and my household and business would spend about £1k a month with them whereas now it's a couple of quid.

It is evident they have taken a hit and I predict they will do so for years to come.

    They are a shoddy outfit.
