I don't drive but..................

Options
I don't drive but I have a car insurance question. Our daughter is due to find cheaper car insurance via confused.com. She is in the forces and her car is parked with her on the base for most of each month. Every other weekend or thereabouts she is home. She tells me that if she uses her base as her home address, the insurance is higher than if she uses our home as her home address. What would you do ?. My feeling is, dam the higher premium, use the base.

  • You could do that, but is it worth them finding out and them turning around and telling her that her insurance is invalid because she lied when she needs to make a claim? Not worth the risk IMO.

If your house is still her 'home' then use that. The base will probably be a higher risk due to the amount of squaddies there claiming from the insurance companies. The base is obviously not going to be her permanent home so I can't see a problem. Why not phone a broker asking for a quote and explain the situation and see what they say.

What is the address on her drivers licence?
    Her car registration document?

If she hasn't changed those two she might aswell use her home address for the insurance.

But legally she should have all 3 at the base address if she is permanently resident there. If she is not permanently resident there and she is just there for a a few months then she can say she is permanently resident at home.

If she wants to be a 100% sure she should ask her insurer and the DVLA what address she should be using.

My car spends more time parked at my office than at home because I work long hours.I would have thought that technically her base address is her work address.

Thanks for all that. As for permanent base, with forces you never really know where or how long you will be at any one place. She has just been relocated after less than 2 yrs. Previous to that it was about 4/5 yrs. I agree that she should explain in full to confused.com and let them decide, but would err on the side of the base.

My insurers specifically ask where my car is parked overnight so unless she isn't asked or is prepared to lie, she is going to have to admit its parked at the base more often than not anyway.

If she lives at the base, she should use that. Obviously if she commutes to and from the base then she should use whatever home address she has but even if the question is not asked, if she lives on the base and keeps the car there overnight, it would be a material fact requiring disclosure.

If she has a big accident in uniform near the base then there will be questions asked and the hassle (and risk of being responsible for the damage due to non-disclosure) doesn't bear thinking about.

Otherwise where do you stop: why should I simply not claim to be a 55-year-old female accountant from Gloucestershire driving a Fiat Cinquecento?

  • Thats not quite the same thing!! I'm at uni and my home address for insurance is my home away from uni. I asked about it and they just said that my official home address was adequate. I think tbh they're never going to know if its parked at the base or your house more....if she has an accident at teh base then she can (quite rightly) say it happened when she was at work!

If the base is in Aberdeen and the parents live in Truro, it's a safe bet they will know.

More to the point it's a material fact which needs to be disclosed whether or not the question is asked. You asked about the address and were told that no further information was needed but in doing so, you gave that disclosure - but that doesn't mean you can assume that every insurer will take the same attitude.

Insurance contracts are an exception to the general rule but here she is specifically being asked what her address is and she's considering giving one which is misleading.
