Tesco said today when interviewed (BBC) that they were reducing BOGOFs as they said some consumers don't like them. So perhaps they are listing to you?

This was part of their overall restructure with the dropping of double points and instead reducing prices on some items (most of which I don't buy of course! ;-(
  • Thanks Julie but (and I know this will sound like I'm making up excuses) I just don't have room in my fridge for all my fruit as well.

The whole of the veg tray is taken up with potatoes (this is the only way I've found of making them last without sprouting or going green) which means one shelf is taken up with the rest of my veg.

The 2nd shelf is taken up by milk (have to bulk buy as need Lacto*free and only available in the supermarket which is a 20 mile round trip) and the final shelf has other "fridgy" things on - yoghurts, meats, sauce jars etc.

Some fruits & veg work pretty well frozen but some others don't (eg Bananas - they go soggy once frozen and are really only "usable" in ice cream / banana loaf etc).

I struggle to get through one bag of apples, oranges etc before they go off, let alone trying to get through 2 - and these don't freeze well as "fruits" to take out and eat as say an apple with your lunch.

Bananas - are cheap enough at supermarkets so there is no point in buying bags of these. Think about your usual consumption, and then buy a range from extremely green to ready to eat and ripen steadily. If over-ripe, freeze chopped bananas in an ice-cube tray as a qucik sweet snack, or to add to smoothies instead of ice.

Apples - last for ages, once they are past their best stew them down with a little sugar, cinnamon, sultanas (and a good slug of Cointreau if you are me!). A delicious pud that you can keep in the fridge for some time, equally when stewed the volume reduces so pack in small plastic containers and freeze. So much better for you w/o crumble topping/ pastry, you can stiill add cream, ice-cream or custard.

Oranges - eat 2 at a time and you'll get through the bag fast, this will also serve as one meal (add a chopped banana and this makes a particularly delicious breakfast). I always buy super-fresh oranges, store in the fridge and take out the required number about 2 days before I want to eat them. And I always finely grate the skin - avoiding the pith - and freeze this too, it adds great flavour to cakes and cookies etc.

Meat / fish - expensive and uneccessary! Give them up and you'll not only save money but have loads more freezer space. Mince is particularly unhealthy so do your body a big favour and stop buying it, it's not a good deal if it's not good for you!

now retired after 35+ years as a supermarket buyer .. and spending much of the latter years negotiating all these bogof etc deals ... i speak with knowledge !!

the Op is absolutely right and i also am now one of those 25% of households with only 1 member who find all the bogofs on perishables annoying ...

but the reality is the sales on a promotion at bogof are so substantially higher than if same offer done just as half price .. and more and more these days the suppliers are simply wanting to drive volume .
Whichever way the offer is done .. be sure it's not the supermarket that funds it .. it is the supplier ... who does produce much cheaper if he's doing double the run .

And as the supermarket results of the last few days show .. it's mighty tough out there and everyone just wants volume .

Yes , to the single household they are annoying ... but the other 75% are mainly quite happy with the multibuy so that's why they'll continue .

An yes they are deliberately aimed more at perishable products .. in the hope that the customer consumes the extra quantity quickly ..and also very likely customers will buy a lot of the items because they look like a good offer .. but weren't on the shopping list. ..... compared with all the grocery stuff where some of us have a years stock of cleaning stuff .. loo rolls , coffee etc etc . All these offers do is get that supplier the volume on the day .. rather than their competitor ie if you're going to buy a few weeks/months worth they'd rather it was their product.

Where i see it going very wrong for the manufacturer now is that it's far less a case now of manufactureres stealing a competitors sale .... because now so many products are on offer and everywhere ... that you don't have to swop brands to get a cheap price .. as your preferred brands will be on offer somewhere ... sometime soon .
The big brands .. nescafe .. pg .. persil.. colgate .. mcvitie etc etc have all been dragged screaming into bogofs .. because at first when they resisted they lost out as people started brand switching .

Don't believe any of this " less offers more long term prices" etc .. it's all spin .. they might do it for a few weeks but then they'll just go back to how it was ... and as many half price ... bogof .. now B1G2F and we'll see what comes next . Any & every variation of offers will continue !

I know prices of certain products have been increasing a lot but believe me the grocery trade has never been so competitive , qualities are continually going up , particularly in own label ... the number of offers is growing all the time , there's more and more £vouchers around .. and the "price war" between the big 4 is going to get bigger & bigger .

I'm not sure quite how this can be done, I just want to spend the same to get the same, not spend more to get more!

People tend to use more if they have more, even if they don't realise it. So people will buy more and then go back for more.

It also gives you more time to get used to a product - especially for kids - and you learn "I eat these biscuits". So next time you go shopping you're more likely to buy the familiar brand - which is twice as familiar, because you had to use 2.

And it's like "wooo, freebie!" so some people don't care if it's wasted because, well, it was free. There's also "it's free so I might as well have it".

    .

I struggle to get through one bag of apples, oranges etc before they go off,

I got a bag of apples with a useby date of Sept 10th in my fridge and they are still crisp, have taste and look like I bought them earlier this week. I only buy Granny Smiths, Braeburn, Cox and Pink Lady. These are hard apples. I don't do mushy apples like Golden Delicious and can't comment on these.
