As a new pet owner, I have to say that before I got Maisie, I wasn't even aware of microchips in pets, and I would imagine that many people who don't have pets would be the same. So whilst I would hope that if anything happened to Maisie, someone might take her to the vets to be scanned, I think you have to accept that many people wouldn't even know this was possible. Also as much as we love our pets, I don't think we can expect that any stranger who may happen upon a dead cat will have any appreciation about how important it may be to someone.

Although the OP does have cats, so will know about chipping etc, I can imagine how distressing it must have been to deal with the poor thing being so badly damaged, and if she had been mine, I would just have been glad to know that someone took her in and had the kindness to bury her rather than just throwing her away or leaving her in the road. I really don't see how anyone can criticise the OP for that.

That's right, you do have to report a dog. The law views cats and dogs very differently. Dogs have to be in their owner's control when out in public, its illegal to let them roam, you have to put a collar and tag on them with certain information etc. Whereas cats are seen more like semi wild animals, they can roam where they want with no owner in sight, they don't need any ID and you don't need to report a dead one any more than you would a dead fox or rabbit.

Thought as much. Since I live in the country-there's a load of feral cats around, so can see why that's the case. I do think it's wrong-but the way of the world I guess.:( It'd break my heart to actually hit a cat or dog though. I hit a rabbit once- and sang bright eyes for ages afterwards (I know, I know- I'm a saddo)

They have sold the childhood property and actually today was the first time I thought of my guinea-pig and other animals in a while.

What I didn't like is the cat died in France when I was living in England. It was almost two years before I could visit. The grieving was hard because I couldn't visit but by the time I did, I didn't really need to any more.

Why did you delete your post?

Looking back I thought I was a bit harsh. Each to their own. I'm a bit more brutal though and like to teach death as way of life. I'm actually taking my family to watch 2 pigs of our neighbours be killed soon so that we all respect what we're doing when eating meat.
Should be a great day out, well it'll be horrific but we'll get some sausages at the end so that'll be great :)

Also, I'm glad I've read this as I wouldn't have known to get a cat scanned for a chip.

I read that as 'taking my family to watch 2 of our neighbours be killed'!

I hope your family have got a choice in the matter is all I'll say...

I haven't read the whole thread

My cats are chipped so that a) we can be reunited if they get injured or lost and b) I will have the peace of mind of knowing what has happened if they get killed.

To my mind if you see a dead cat the first thing you do is ring the vets or take the cat to the vets. Some vets will attend OOH to scan animals in this situation.

No vet will advise you to bury the animal.

Harsh as it may sound it is not the right thing to do IMHO. The right thing to do is to ensure that the animal is somehow someway either taken to or collected by someone who will scan them for a chip.

Again, only IMHO - If you aren't prepared to ensure that that happens, then the best thing to do is to move the animal out of traffic if you can bring yourself to do so and ring the vets to report it. And yes, I have been out to pick up deceased animals from the roadside, and yes I have known quite a few vets who will get out of bed to scan a dead cat.

If you do pick the animal up and can't get hold of a vet, place it in a bin bag and leave it in your garden / shed / garage until morning, where you can take it to the vets and it will get scanned. And yes I would rather that for my cats, than them being buried in a strangers garden!

ETA - it may not have a chip, but I have had to make far too many heatbreaking phone calls in instances where they were chipped, and heard the same thing over and over - 'I'm just glad I know what's happened'
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

I'd just like to say to the OP that whilst what you did wasn't ideal for some, I thought it was incredible loving and kind. If it were my cat, I would've been so pleased that she was laid to rest as quickly as possible rather than left in a box overnight and then ferried around the next day. Your actions were that of a cat lover and I believe that would've been very reassuring to the owner.

I would feel so much more at ease if I had more people like you living near me.
Never argue with an idiot; they'll bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

    Ditto. :undecided

I'm all for education but this is the kind of thing that would affect my daughter (in a bad way) for life. Of course many kids would be able to deal with this well, all depends on the character I guess.
